Hughes Breaks Points Record as Gators Defeat OWU

MEADVILLE, Pa. - Senior attacker Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) became the all-time Allegheny leader in career points as the Gators (2-5, 1-0 NCAC) defeated Ohio Wesleyan (1-3, 0-1 NCAC) by a score of 13-5 on Saturday.

Hughes scored twice early on in the contest as the Gators led 5-3. She then turned a free-position attempt into an assist with a scoring pass to Christina Zanic (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) at the 1:35 mark of the first half. The point gave Hughes 145 for her career, passing current Gator assistant coach Emily Deering ('06) for first on the all-time list.

Zanic would add another score on an eight-meter shot with just a second left in the half as the Gators took a 7-3 lead into the break.

Allegheny scored three more times to open the second period with Zanic scoring twice and Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland) adding the third, putting the Gators comfortably ahead 10-3.

For the game, Hughes totaled seven points on three goals and two assists, giving her 147 for her career. Zanic also totaled five points with four goals and an assist while Jensen Paterson (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) totaled three goals and three draw controls.

Leslie Stange (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had a light day in goal for Allegheny, needing only four saves while recording a team-high four ground balls.

The Gators return to action on Wednesday, April 2 with a home contest against Washington & Jefferson. Face-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
