No. 2 Princeton Cruises Past Cornell to Move to 7-0
PRINCETON--The opposition may have shifted from top non-conference opposition to the Ivy League schedule, but the Princeton women's lacrosse train just keeps on rolling along. Freshman Lizzy Drumm scored a season-best five goals, including four in an impressive seven-goal Princeton run midway through the first half, as the second-ranked Tigers improved to 7-0 with a 19-10 win over Cornell in Princeton's Ivy League opener Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The win, Princeton's 21st straight against Cornell dating back to 1989, was never in doubt after the Tigers took a 10-3 lead at halftime thanks to that seven-goal run. Princeton actually trailed 1-0 before Drumm scored 11:25 into the game, but the freshman then scored again 32 seconds later and the Tigers were off and running. Kristin Schwab and Ashley Amo then scored in a 37-second span, each thanks to a feed from Katie Lewis-Lamonica, and two more goals by Drumm in a 1:12 span made it 7-1 Princeton less than seven minutes after her first goal.
"It was important to get the first one after being behind early and then everyone started to contribute," said Drumm, who entered the game with seven goals in Princeton's first six games. "I think that we make it difficult on our opponents when we get a run like that because a lot of different players can score and make things happen."
Six Tigers scored at least two goals Saturday as the Tigers improved to 28-2 all-time against the Big Red. Lewis-Lamonica scored four times, all in the second half, while Schwab and Holly McGarvie each had three and Christine Casaceli and Ashley Amo each scored twice. The 19 goals were the most by Princeton against the Big Red in series history.
Cornell (4-3, 1-2 Ivy) got within 10-5 by scoring twice in the first 4:12 of the second half, but Schwab then scored after a Princeton timeout 45 seconds later to begin a three-goal run that ended the Big Red's comeback chances. Courtney Farrell had four goals and an assist for Cornell, which last defeated Princeton in 1988.
Princeton continued the offensive efficiency it has displayed throughout the early season, scoring on 10 of its 15 first-half shots to send Cornell starting goalie Renee Hughes to the sidelines to begin the second half. The Tigers scored on 19 of their 34 shots for the game and have now scored a goal on more than 50% of its shots this season (87 of 171).
Meanwhile, sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Perrelle was sharp again, stopping a season-high nine shots. Princeton also had 11 caused turnovers on the day, making up for an advantage in draw controls by Cornell for much of the game.
"We don't talk too much about our ranking or anything like that, but I do think we've done some good things to get to this point and we have to continue that," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "This game was even more important than last week (against Virginia) because it's an Ivy League game."
An impressive seven Princeton players had assists on the day, led by three from Casaceli, as the Tigers had assists on 10 of their 19 goals. Princeton also won the ground ball battle 20-15. Princeton plays at Columbia Wednesday night. The Tigers are 10-0 all-time against the Lions.
