4th Quarter Rally Gives Ursinus Win vs. McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Two goals from Ursinus senior midfielder Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) in the final 4:05 of the fourth quarter broke open a 4-4 tie, lifting the Bears (5-4, 3-1 Centennial) to a 7-4 win over McDaniel (4-4, 0-2 Centennial) Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.

Mangin, along with sophomore attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford), each had two goals as the Bears have now won three out of their last four matches.

Ursinus junior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) made 19 saves on the day, facing 34 Green Terror shots. He also picked up a team-high seven groundballs. Ursinus had 37 groundballs on the afternoon, compared to 27 for McDaniel.

Senior defenseman Eric Hoffman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) had five groundballs along with four caused turnovers for Ursinus.

For McDaniel, junior attack Mike Hatton scored a team-high two goals, while junior midfielder Bill Warner and sophomore attack Gibbs Preston each had a goal.

Aside from Mangin and Monzo, Ursinus got goals from senior attack Justin Reinke (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), freshman midfielder Tony Ubertaccio (Green Village, NY/Delbarton) and freshman midfielder Jason Smith (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) in the win. Monzo also had an assist.

McDaniel took a 2-0 lead after the first quarter, before Ursinus rattled off three straight goals to take a 3-2 advantage. Monzo started the scoring at 12:22 on a goal from a Hoffman assist, then scored his second goal of the game at 6:48 unassisted.

Ubertaccio tapped the scoring run just eight seconds later for a 3-2 Bears lead. McDaniel tied the score with 1:18 left as Preston scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Anthony Falgares.

Smith scored his goal with 9:25 left in the third on an assist from freshman midfielder Jeff Leonard (Ambler, PA/Germantown Academy) to give Ursinus a 4-3 lead. McDaniel tied the score again at 4-all when Warner scored on a Preston assist with 3:15 left on an extra-man opportunity.

After Mangin scored his two goals in the final stanza, Reinke added his goal with just 59 seconds left for a 7-4 lead.

Ursinus forced 18 McDaniel turnovers on the day, and held McDaniel to just two goals on eight extra-man opportunities.

The Bears will travel to Messiah on Wednesday, the first of a two match road trip.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Dane Mangin scored twice during a three-goal fourth quarter, breaking a 4-all deadlock and giving Ursinus a 7-4 win over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Mike Hatton (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) scored twice for the Green Terror (4-4, 0-2 CC), who has alternated wins and losses through its first eight games of the season.

Dan Monzo added two goals for the Bears (5-4, 3-1 CC), including back-to-back- tallies to erase a 2-0 McDaniel lead.

Knotted at 4-all through 55 minutes of play, Mangin finished a Monzo feed with 4:05 to play to give the hosts a one-goal advantage.

With 1:31 to play, Mangin pushed the advantage to two before Justin Reinke tallied unassisted with 59 seconds on the clock to seal the win.

Hatton scored at either end of the first quarter to stake the Green Terror to a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Monzo's consecutive markers nearly five-and-a-half minutes apart in the second quarter knotted the game before Tony Ubertaccio scored eight seconds after Monzo's second goal to give Ursinus a 3-2 lead.

Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) found the back of the net 1 minute, 18 seconds before intermission to knot the game at halftime before Jason Smith and Bill Warner (Yardley, Pa./LaSalle) exchanged goals in the third quarter to once again knot the score.

Matt Angle won 7 of 12 faceoffs for Urinus, who also held a 37-27 advantage in ground balls.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
