No. 12 Wesleyan Pulls Away from No. 19 Bowdoin

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Wesleyan, ranked 12th in Division III, rattled off 12 unanswered goals in a span of 37 minutes to erase all trace of a 4-1, second-period deficit vs. 19th-ranked Bowdoin and go on for a 13-5 victory, its fifth in a row over the Polar Bears. Senior Grayson Connors netted five goals for the Cardinals and broke a 4-4 tie at 10:55 of the third quarter to put Wesleyan ahead for good.

Junior Spike Malangone had scooped up a ground ball in the Wesleyan defensive zone, one of 12 grounders for the All-American in the contest. He fed ahead to junior Russ Follansbee who spotted Connors near the crease for the one-on-one play with the goalie. Less than three minutes later, Connors hit the twine again to make it 6-4 and the streak continued until the score stood 13-4 on a goal by junior Dan Latzman with 4:28 left in the game.

Bowdoin, which last scored at 9:19 of the second period on a freshman Kevin Raymond fast-break goal, ended its drought with only 1:48 remaining as junior Matt Legg got to a loose ball in front and rolled the ball into the Wesleyan goal.

Earlier, Bowdoin had built the 4-1 edge on the hat trick of top scorer sophomore Adam Tracy, who has 11 goals and 12 assists on the year for 23 points. Follansbee, who paces the Cardinals with 12 goals and 14 assists, had a four-point day (1-3-4) while sophomore Jon Killeen chipped in with three Wesleyan goals.

In the Wesleyan net, junior Mike Borrero kept his seasonal numbers intact as he came into the contest with a .696 save percentage and a 4.36 goals-against average. He played 55:32 in the cage while yielding just four goals and making 11 saves.
