St. Mary's (Md.) Holds off Villa Julie

Owings Mills, Md. – Junior midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) notched her fourth hat trick in the last six games as Zerhusen led the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to their second straight victory with a 13-10 triumph over Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Villa Julie College, Saturday afternoon.

Zerhusen finished the action with a game- and season-high five points on three goals and two assists, while senior midfielder Elizabeth Northfield (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) added a hat trick as well.

The Seahawks (7-3, 3-0 CAC) started off the scoring right away with a goal by sophomore attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) just 23 seconds into it as Zerhusen assisted on the play. Jamie Jones answered right back a minute later to equalize the game at 1-1 before St. Mary's went on a 4-0 run to post a 5-1 advantage at 23:43.

A 3-1 spurt in the final 8:50 of the first half provided SMCM with a 9-4 cushion at intermission behind a goal and an assist each from junior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and sophomore attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford).

Villa Julie (5-4, 1-4 CAC) outscored the Seahawks 6-4 in the second 30 minutes but the Seahawks' first half five-goal advantage was enough to hold off the Mustangs' comeback attempts.

Carrier added two goals and two assists, while freshman midfielder Aileen McCausland (Phoenix, Md./Hereford) contributed a goal and a pair of assists for the Seahawks. McCausland also scooped up a game- and team-high four ground balls and Zerhusen had four draw controls.

Lauren Zegowitz paced her Mustangs with three goals and two assists, while Jones found the back of the net three times. Cat Connelly put up two goals and two assists and Mandi Carr won a game-high five draw controls, while Zegowitz and Connelly each had four ground balls.

Freshman Ella Schoming (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) picked up a season-high 20 saves as Villa Julie fired off 46 shots.

Villa Julie's three goalies combined for six stops on SMCM's 24 shots.

The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday, April 2 when St. Mary's travels to Arlington, Virginia to face Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action at 8:00. The game will be played at Wakefield High School.
