Kenyon Rushes to Lead, Downs Washington & Jefferson
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Kenyon College rushed out to a 9-2 halftime lead and held off a late Washington & Jefferson College rally to record a 14-10 men's lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Lords (5-1) led 3-2 after the first quarter and piled on six unanswered goals by six different scorers in the second quarter to claim a 9-2 halftime lead. Devin Catlin scored one goal during the period and assisted on two others.
Noah Flessel scored two goals in the first six minutes of the third quarter to up the Lords' lead to 11-2, but the Presidents rallied with eight of the next nine goals over an 11-minute stretch to narrow the gap to 12-10 with 14:05 remaining in the game.
Junior attacker Zach Devilbiss (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) capped a 5-0 W&J spurt at the 3:48 mark of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11-7, but Jordan Zimolka upped the KC lead back to 12-7 two minutes later.
W&J senior midfielder Russ Kalkstein (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) ended the third-quarter scoring with 56 seconds left. Devilbiss then closed the deficit to 12-9 15 seconds into the final period with a man-up goal and senior midfielder Chris Vogel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) followed with another extra-man goal 40 seconds later to bring W&J to within 12-10.
The Presidents had a chance to get within one goal, but Kenyon forced a turnover and Brett Fuller capitalized with a goal at the 9:45 mark. Catlin netted the game's final goal with 5:43 remaining and the Lords hung on for the victory.
Flessel led the Lords with four goals, while Catlin added two goals and four assists. Fuller scored three times, while Nate Pritchard handed out three assists.
David Page collected the win in goal for Kenyon after making eight saves. The Lords held a 45-27 shot advantage and scored on 2-of-11 extra-man opportunities.
Vogel finished with a team-high six points (3 goals, 3 assists) for W&J, while Devilbiss scored three goals and added one assist. Kalkstein totaled five points (2 goals, 3 assists), while winning 16-of-20 faceoff attempts. He also collected 11 ground balls.
Sophomore midfielder T.J. Mollica (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) rounded out the W&J scorers with a pair of goals. Freshman goalie Quinton Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) finished with 17 saves for W&J.
Washington & Jefferson held a 39-31 advantage in ground balls on won 18-of-25 faceoffs. The Presidents scored on 3-of-7 extra-man chances.
Washington & Jefferson (3-4) continues its 2008 schedule on Wednesday when traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Medaille College at 4:00 pm.
