Manhattanville Women's Lacrosse Falls at Lycoming
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Senior Cory Alcorn (Orangeville, Ontario) scored five goals and assisted on another, but that was all the offense for the Valiants as Lycoming scored 12 times in the first half and pulled away for a 21-6 win Saturday afternoon in Manhattanvilles first Middle Atlantic Conference game.
The preseason pick to win the MAC, Lycoming gave the Valiants a rude welcome into the conference in Manhattanvilles first league game since departing the Skyline Conference last summer. Saturdays game was also the Valiants first on the road since a season-opening loss to Western New England on March 6. Manhattanville had played five straight games at home on GoValiants.com Field.
Alcorn tied the score at one early in the first half with her first goal of the day Saturday, but the Warriors scored 11 of the next 12 goals and carried a commanding 12-2 lead into halftime. Colleen Holahan (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) had Manhattanvilles other first half goal, coming off an assist from Alcorn less than 10 minutes into the period.
The Valiants struck first in the second half on one of Alcorns three free position goals. The senior struck again with two more free position goals midway through the period and finished Manhattanvilles side of the scoring with 2:28 left before Lycoming added a pair of goals in the final 70 seconds of the game.
A three-time All-Conference selection, Alcorn is on pace for another outstanding season as a senior, leading the Valiants in goals (22), points (25), ground balls (32), draw controls (22) and caused turnovers (17). Alcorn also continued her climb up the Valiants all-time leaderboard Saturday, moving within six goals of Ann Spataro (141) for third on the career goal list and within 13 points of Spataro (191) for third place in points.
Kirstin Betsill (Parkton, Md.) was peppered with 31 Warrior shots and came a way within seven saves in defeat. Holahan added two ground balls and caused turnover to her line defensively.
Sarah Wingerden and Christi Karr each had five points for Lycoming (5-3, 2-0 MAC) to lead the way, with Karr scoring a game-high four goals. Megan Wallenhorst and Ashley Steel each chipped in three goals and an assist, while Kristin Peacock turned away 16 shots for the victory in the cage.
Manhattanville (3-4, 0-1 MAC) returns to action Monday for a non-conference road tilt at Ramapo at 4:30 p.m. The Valiants come back home two days later to host conference foe FDU-Florham at 4:00 p.m.
