Colgate Comes Up Short Against No. 16 Oregon
HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/30/08) - Colgate scored the last five goals of the game and kept the No. 14/16 Oregon women's lacrosse team off the board over the last 18:45, but the Raider rally fell short in an 11-9 loss to the Ducks on Sunday, Mar. 30, at Tyler's Field. With the loss, Colgate's overall record stands at 5-7, while Oregon improves to 9-3 on the year.
Trailing 11-4 with just under 20 minutes to play in the game, Colgate found a higher gear at both ends of the field. Just 23 seconds after Oregon scored its 11th goal of the game, the Raiders responded when freshman Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored on a free-position attempt. Colgate added three more goals over the next seven minutes and stopped every Duck scoring chance during that time to keep it a three-goal game. The Raiders added a goal by senior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) at the 24:24 mark to pull within two, but that was as close as they would get.
Colgate scored two of the first three goals of the game before Oregon went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-2 lead. Raider junior Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) found the back of the net with 3:10 left in the opening half to make the score 7-3 at the break. The Ducks continued to pour on the offense, scoring four of the first five goals of the second half, before the Raiders took over for the rest of the game.
The Raiders got two-goal efforts from Carroll, Bubnack, junior Maddie Kearns (Chevy Chase, Md.), and sophomore Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.). Van der Meulen finished with a goal and an assist, and sophomore Meghan Lawler (Liverpool, N.Y.) chipped in a helper.
Oregon's offense was paced by native Upstate New Yorker Lindsay Killian, who netted four goals. Jen May posted two goals and an assist, while Theresa Waldron had a goal and two helpers. Cara Mead contributed a goal and an assist, while Erin Chisnell, Alex Breiner, and Jenny Browne all found the back of the net once. Oregon leading scorer Ilsa van den Berg was held to just one assist on the day.
Colgate junior goaltender Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) finished the game with 11 saves, while Duck keeper Anna Poponyak posted six stops. Oregon outshot Colgate 28-16, including 17-4 in the first half. The Ducks posted a 22-11 advantage on groundballs, but the Raiders earned the edge on draws, 12-10. Turnovers may have been the key to Colgate's undoing in the game, as the Raiders gave up the ball 27 times, while Oregon turned the ball over just 18 times.
