Louisville Lacrosse Falls at Home to No. 8 Georgetown
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Playing against a top 20 nationally ranked team for the first time in school history, the University of Louisville lacrosse team dropped a 13-5 decision to No. 8 Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium as the Hoyas used a strong second half surge to close out the Cards.
After falling behind 2-0 through the first 15 minutes, the Cards (7-3) cut the Hoyas lead in half with 14:53 as first-year attacker Bergan Foley scored the first of her three goals on the day. Georgetown (8-2) pushed the lead to 3-1 with 11:29 left in the first half on the first of four goals from Ashby Kaestner, but the Cards answered back making it 3-2 with 10:56 to go on another Foley goal.
Kaestner turned the tide back in favor of the Hoyas scoring the games next three goals, including two before halftime for a 5-2 Hoyas lead and another goal with 27:03 left in the contest to make it 6-2. After another Georgetown goal made it 7-2, the Cards stopped the scoring streak as first-year midfielder Sierra Smith-Hart scored with 22:45 to go to make it 7-3.
However, thats as close as the Cards would get the rest of the way as the Hoyas scored six of the games final eight goals to bounce back from their narrow 7-6 loss at No. 1 ranked and unbeaten Northwestern on Friday night.
Every time we take the field, were looking to win the game, regardless of the fact that were a first-year program, said Cards head coach Kellie Young. We played hard for 30 minutes and I can live with the 5-2 deficit we had at halftime because of our effort, but we just gave up in the second half and thats frustrating. Its disappointing to see a team with great athletes falter in its time to shine.
Now, we have to bounce back from this and get ready for Loyola. We have to work on our transition game, learn from this experience and move on. Foley, who entered the week ranked fifth in the nation in scoring with 4.11 goals per game, led the Cards with three goals and two ground balls, while Emily Dashiell and Sierra Smith-Hart added the Cards other goals.
The loss was the first at home for the Cards in the inaugural season. Up next, the Cards will continue their six-game home stand against Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m. ET at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.

Louisville, Ky. – The eighth-ranked Georgetown University women's lacrosse team outshot Louisville, 35-17 and the Hoyas held a 14-5 advantage on draw controls as Georgetown posted a 13-5 victory over Louisville on Sunday afternoon at U of L Lacrosse Stadium. A season-high nine different Hoyas scored in the game.
The Hoyas held a 5-2 lead at halftime before they scored four of the first five goals in the second half over a nine-minute stretch and the Blue and Gray cruised the rest of the way.
“Coming off an emotional game on Friday at Northwestern, we got off to a bit of a slow start but I was happy we went into the game like it was a BIG EAST game (Louisville women's lacrosse joins the BIG EAST in 2009),” said head coach Ricky Fried. “We had a lot of people contribute today in positive ways.”
GU sophomore Ashby Kaestner netted four goals to go along with an assist while junior Bunny O'Reilly notched two goals and three draw controls.
Six of the Hoya goals were on free position attempts with O'Reilly, Logan McCraw and Kaestner scoring from the eight-meter in the first half.
Georgetown held a 3-2 lead with 11 minutes to go in the first half but Kaestner notched two goals for the visitors, one at the six minute mark and one with 1:28 to go in the half for a 5-2 lead at intermission.
