Zwick's OT Goal Gives UMass Win at George Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Melynda Zwick scored just over two minutes into overtime on Sunday and it proved the game-winning goal as the UMass women's lacrosse team defeated George Washington at the Mount Vernon Complex in Washington, D.C. Kathleen Typadis paced the UMass offense with three goals. The Minutewomen controlled the first half taking a 6-3 halftime lead before the Colonials battled back to tie the game with just under two minutes remaining.
UMass will return to action on Sunday, April 6 against Temple in McGuirk Stadium. The Minuteowmen improve to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington falls to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in the A-10.
The Minutewomen took a 4-0 lead in the first 10:29 of play before George Washingotn was able to score back-to-back goals to cut into the lead. Typadis scored two more goals to answer late in the half before the Colonials scored with just over a minute left in the first half.
The second half saw George Washington mount a comeback as the outscored UMass 5-2 to tie the game and force overtime. Kristin Karsch scored all of her game-high four goals in the second half including the first two of the half and the game-tying goal with 1:41 left in regulation.
In the overtime, Karsh turned the ball over and Kaytlin McCormick found Zwick for the game-winner in transition.
For the game, UMass outshot George Washington 28-to-33 and held a 13-to-8 draw control advantage. In the overtime UMass tallied three shots while allowing the Colonials just one.
Colleen Speth earned the win in cage making eight saves, while GW keeper Caitlin Garman stopped 10 shots.
