Roanoke Maroons Run by Whittier

The men's lacrosse team defeated Whittier, 11-5, at Donald J. Kerr Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The men improved its record to 5-3 on the season while the Poets dropped to 3-3. The Maroons won their second game in the series and their first since 1993 (2-3).

The Maroons won the groundball battle, 60-36 and won 12-of-18 face-offs. The men were also successful in 27-of-32 clear attempts while both teams got off 43 shots in the game.

Roanoke, who is ranked #13 in the nation, was down early, 2-1 after Sean McCarroll and David Barr goals put Whittier ahead with 9:38 remaining in the first period.

The Maroons took control the rest of the game, scoring 10 of the next 12 goals to seal their fifth victory of the season. The Maroons have outscored their opponents, 45-21 over the last three home games, including a 24-9 advantage in the second half.

Matt Quinton led all scorers with three goals and an assist for Roanoke. Pat March and Ashton Hotchkiss each netted two goals apiece for the Maroons. Justin Tuma led Maroons with two assists while Tim Hammernick, Matt Nicola and Steve Furdock each had a goal each in the win.

Chas Carlson had one goal and two assists to pace the Maroons. He now sits at 19th on the Maroons all-time scoring list (130). He also passed Will Goldthwait '90 in career assists with 75. Carlson led the Maroons with a season-best nine groundballs.

Jake Dorsey finished with a career-high 20 saves on the afternoon for the Maroons. Ben Brown totaled 18 for the Poets. Billy Cameron won 7-of-10 face-offs and picked up six groundballs.

The men will return to ODAC play on Wednesday, April 2, when they travel to W&L. The Maroons are 17-23 all-time vs. the Generals but Roanoke has won four of the last five meetings. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
