Spiders Power Past La Salle for Victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond women's lacrosse team took down La Salle, 19-5, for its second Atlantic 10 win of 2008. The Spiders had nine players hit the back of net, led by Allison Furstenburg who recorded five goals and added two assists. Freshman Anne Ryan also put up impressive numbers earning four goals of her own. The Explorers had five players each earn a goal in their second A-10 loss of the season.

La Salle started off the day's scoring with a goal from Elizabeth Iacullo less than three minutes into play. After seven minutes of scoreless play by both teams, the Spiders finally earned their first notch of the day about 10 minutes into the first half.

Allison Furstenburg put in two straight goals to spark a Richmond six goal run to get up on the Explorers 6-1 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first. Mandy Friend put in two of the Spiders six straight goals to earn two of her three points of the day.

The Spiders led the Explorers, 9-3 at the end of the first half. Richmond came out of halftime on a roll putting in another five straight goals for an 11 point cushion over La Salle.

The Explorers (0-9, 0-2) got back on the board with 17 minutes left to play with two straight goals of their own. Freshman Jules Nicola answered the run with her first notch of the game with just over 13 minutes to go off an assist from Claire Cunniff. Nicola finished the day with two goals while Cunniff recorded two assists total.

The goal begun yet another five goal Spider run. Sarah Townsend scored her first goal of 2008 to end Richmond's run with just over a minute to play off a free-position shot.

Richmond goalie, Erica Marrocco allowed just five goals while earning nine saves for the Spiders. The Spiders out-shot the Explorers 40-27 and put in seven of their ten free position shots.

The Spiders (4-7, 2-0) continue to play A-10 opponents on the road next week. First up, Richmond will take on St. Bonaventure Friday, April 4 at 3:00 p.m. ET in Olean, N.Y. The Spiders will then turn around two days later to play at Duquesne Sunday, April 6 at 12:00 p.m. ET.
