Long Island University Falls to Rival Manhattan

Brooklyn, N.Y. – The Long Island University women's lacrosse team fell to local-rival Manhattan, 20-9, on Tuesday afternoon at LIU Field. Freshman Annie Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) led the Blackbirds in scoring with three goals.

The Blackbirds took an early lead as Kalata tallied a pair of goals sandwiched around a Jaspers goal to stake LIU a 2-1 lead at the 23:07 mark. Manhattan responded with a goal from Tara Convery to spark a 4-0 run, capped by two goals from Alicia Psillos to make it 5-2 with 14:23 left in the first period.

LIU (2-8) got a goal back when freshman Sara LaNoir (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored on an unassisted effort, but Manhattan's Phelicia Von Overbeke tallied consecutive goals to push the lead to 7-3. Sophomore Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) and LaNoir cut LIU's deficit in half with back-to-back goals to make it 7-5 with 5:46 to play in the period. That was as close as LIU could get, however, as Manhattan closed the period with four unanswered goals.

Manhattan (5-1) continued to click offensively in the second half as it opened with two goals before Kalata scored for LIU at the 25:56 mark to make it 13-6. The Jaspers responded with a decisive 6-0 run to put the game out of reach. A goal by sophomore Jenna Schauder (Jackson, N.J.) and two more from senior Sam Fischbeck (Baltimore, Md.) got the Blackbirds to within, 19-9, but Alicia Psillos scored her seventh of the day with 6:02 to play to close out the scoring.

Freshman Kimberly Bostwick (East Northport, N.Y.) made nine saves for the Blackbirds. Senior Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) picked up six ground balls and caused four turnovers. The Jaspers were led by Psillos' seven goals and three assists and got four more scores from Helen Kerrisk.

The Blackbirds host Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference matchup on Friday, April 4, at 4:00 p.m. on LIU Field.
