No. 12 UMBC Defeats Towson for Fifth Straight Win

TOWSON, Md. – Senior attackman Terry Kimener (Brighton Acad./Oakton, Va.) recorded his second "hat trick" of the season by scoring a game-high three goals with an assist as 12th-ranked UMBC (6-3) won its fifth straight game, a 9-6 non-conference victory over Towson University (2-6) at the Tigers' Johnny Unitas Stadium on Tuesday evening.

It was the Retrievers' second straight win over the Tigers in the series. Towson still leads the series by a 26-13 margin.

Sophomore attackman Chris Jones (Bridgewater-Raritan H.S./Martinsville, N.J.) gave the Retrievers a 1-0 lead with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter before senior midfielder Timmy Andre (Chaminade H.S./Rockville Centre, N.Y.) tied the game with his third goal of the season, an unassisted marker past junior goalkeeper Jeremy Blevins (Calvert Hall H.S./Cockeysville, Md.).

The teams traded goals for a second time before the Tigers took a 3-2 advantage as senior midfielder Brian Vetter (Annapolis H.S./Annapolis, Md.) scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior Justin Schneider (St. Mary's H.S./Stevensville, Md.).

However, the Retrievers held the Tigers scoreless for over 31 minutes and ran off six straight goals to take an 8-3 lead they did not relinquish. Kimener scored two of his three goals during the spurt while junior attackman Ryan Smith (Fallston H.S./Fallston, Md.) added a goal with two assists.

With 9:17 remaining in the fourth quarter, freshman midfielder Matt Hanzsche (Mt. St. Joseph H.S./Catonsville, Md.) ended the Towson drought with his second goal of the year to cut the margin to 8-4. After freshman attackman Dom Scalzo (Webster Thomas H.S./Webster, N.Y.) scored to extend the Retriever advantage to 9-4, the Tigers scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes to close within 9-6, but were unable to get any closer.

Kimener led the Retrievers with his four-point effort while Scalzo added a pair of goals. Smith had a goal with two assists as UMBC outshot the Tigers by a 38-31 margin.

Blevins made 16 saves in the victory for UMBC and moved into fifth place on the school's career saves list. He has 419 career saves in three years.

"I thought both goalkeepers played spectacular tonight," Towson Coach Tony Seaman said. "But, we gave UMBC three goals that they didn't have to work for and that was the margin of the game tonight. They took advantage of our mistakes and in the end it cost us the game.

"We have to find a way to turn things around," Seaman added. "You can't do what we did tonight and expect to win games at this level."

Vetter and senior attackman Jonathan Engelke (Farmingdale H.S./Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Tigers in the loss with one goal and one assist while senior goalkeeper Billy Sadtler (Albemarle H.S./Charlottesville, Va.) made a career-high 13 saves.

The Tigers will resume their Colonial Athletic Association schedule on Saturday afternoon when they host defending CAA champion Delaware at Unitas Stadium at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WMAR-TV and ESPNU.
