No. 9 New Haven Too Much for Golden Lions
Brookhaven, NY - Sayville sisters Ashley (4) and Mallory Ferrandiz (3) combined for 7 goals as #9 New Haven defeated Dowling 13-9 at Golden Lions Field. The win improves the Chargers record to 7-1 (3-1) as Dowling drops to 4-3 (1-1).
New Haven jumped out early scoring the games first 5 goals, a pair each coming from A. Ferrandiz and Brigid Brady (Islip Terrace, NY). Cassandra Cronin (Islip Terrace, NY) would put the Golden Lions on the board and cut into the Charger lead at 5-1. Tthe Chargers would continue their first half dominance as Brady would add her third of the game and goals from each of thr Ferrandiz sisters would push the New Haven lead to 8-2 going into the break.
Dowling came out with more energy in the second half, resulting in increased opportunities for the Golden Lion offense but not enough to dig them out of the first half hole. Three unanswered goals would close the gap to 3 (8-5) as freshmen Pamela McGirr (Copiague, NY) converted on her 8-meter opportunity, her second of the game. A late run by New Haven would put the game out of reach, Heather Miles (Oswego, NY) took a feed from Brady and beat Dowling keeper Rachael Goldstein (Ridge, NY) and with 5:57 to play New Haven lead 12-6. A flurry of Dowling goals at the end made it close, but New Haven held on for the 13-9 victory.
Hustle stats told the story of the game. New Haven won the battle in the first half (Draw Controls (DC's): 10-1 & Ground Balls (GB's): 20-14) while Dowling won in the second half (DC's: 7-6, GB's: 19-8). For the Golden Lions, Cronin finished with 2 goals on the day and Melanie Burgos (Coram, NY) tallied a goal and an assist. Lauren Marra (New Hyde Park, NY) chipped in with a game high 7 ground balls. For the Chargers, in adition to her 4 goals, A. Ferrandiz had 5 draw controls. M. Ferrandiz had a terrific all around day, finishing with 3 goals, 1 assist, 4 ground balls, and 3 draw controls
Dowling returns to action Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 against Dominican in non-conference action.
