Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Holds off Rain, Bulldogs
Claremont, CA – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas lacrosse team was able to hold off the rain and the Redlands Bulldogs tonight under the lights on Zinda Field. Freshman phenom Molly Murtaugh (Wilton HS, Wilton, CT) led the Athenas to victory with a season high 6 points, (4g, 2a). CMS improves to 8-2 overall with their 17-8 victory over the Bulldogs, who drop to 3-5.
Redlands struck first after only 53 seconds of play when they chased a missed CMS shot out of bounds and were able to carry it end to end and put it by senior goalkeeper Katya Strohl, (River Forest, Oak Hill, IL). Strohl and the rest of the Athenas defensive unit were able to keep the Bulldogs out of the scoring column for the next 19 minutes, allowing for the CMS offense to go on a 6-0 run. Senior Callae Snively, (Cherry Creek, Englewood, CO) and sophomore Cassy Delano (Williston Northampton School, Boston, MA) led the Athenas first-half run with two goals a piece.
Birthday girl Kristen Steenerson paced the CMS defense who combined for 14 caused turnovers and held the run and gun Redlands transition offense to a mere two second half goals. Sophomore Colbi Brawner (Bainbridge, Bainbridge Island, WA) scored four of her five goals in the second half while midfielders Devon Scott and Olivia Rotondi combined for seven caused turnovers and six draw controls.
Freshman Jessica Cathcart (Davis HS, Davis, CA) stepped into the goal for the Athenas in the second half and came up with four saves. Redlands freshman Christy Smith (Edina HS, St. Louis Park, MN) came into the contest averaging five goals a game and was held to three goals on the day.
