Southern Maine Gets First Win, Downs St. Joseph's

PORTLAND, Maine -- Sophomore Jessica Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) and freshman Kristy Kendrick (Waterboro, Maine) combined for 11 goals as the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse defeated St. Joseph's College, 20-3, in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland.

The win was the first of the season for the Huskies (1-5) and snaps a five-game losing streak. The 20 goals scored equaled the school record for most goals in a game set in 2001 against Rhode Island College. The Monks, playing their first varsity season, dropped their second straight game to fall to 1-3.

Knight had six goals for the second time this season, and has score 14 goals in the last three games.. Kendrick scored a season-high five goals and dished off two assist for a seven-point night.

Sophomore Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) had three goals and senior Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic) added two goals and an assist for USM. Senior goalie Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Millbrook School) had seven saves before giving way to freshman Michelle Kozma (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner Area) who had one stop.

Freshman Lilly Rodden (Berwick, Maine/Noble) and sophomores Jaimee Brett (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford Hills) and Vanessa Brooks (Bath, Maine/Morse) had the goals for St. Joe's. Sophomore Jackie Zaccardo (Reading, Mass./Our Lady of Nazareth Academy) and freshman Chynna Nicholas (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Stang) each played a half in goal and combined for 11 saves.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:30 p.m.) hosting Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference game at Deering High School. St. Joseph's will host Emerson College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game being played at the University of New England.
