Washington & Lee Upends Roanoke in ODAC Action

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team recovered from a 7-3 deficit early in the third period to post an 11-10 victory over Roanoke College in ODAC action on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (6-4, 2-0) led 3-2 early in the second quarter, but saw the Maroons reel off five-straight goals, including a pair by junior midfielder Benjamin Sultze (Acworth, Ga./Ft. Collins), as Roanoke pushed out to a 7-3 lead with 12:50 left in the third quarter.

W&L answered with five consecutive goals of its own, including two tallies from junior midfielder Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford), to post an 8-7 lead with 2:13 left in the third period. Each team added one more goal before the end of the period and W&L carried a 9-8 lead into the final quarter.

Roanoke (5-4, 0-2) knotted the score at 9-9 just 1:52 into the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal by Sultze, but the Generals took the lead for good at 10-9 on a goal by sophomore attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) off a feed from junior midfielder Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) with 3:25 left in the game. Junior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) scored unassisted just 1:18 later to give the Generals an 11-9 lead and Roanoke senior midfielder Bill Cameron (Salem, Va./Salem) scored unassisted at 1:25 to provide the final margin.

Keigler led W&L with three goals and two assists, while St. John had two goals and two assists. Senior attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) and Fishman notched two goals apiece and Skeen posted one goal and two helpers. Junior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) stopped eight shots in goal.

Sultze and sophomore attackman Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored three goals each to lead the Roanoke offense. Sophomore attackman Pat March (Glen Burnie, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) had two goals and one assist, while junior midfielder Chas Carlson (Cockeysville, Md./St. Paul's) chipped in a pair of assists. Sophomore Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) recorded 17 saves between the pipes.

Washington and Lee will no break for finals before returning to action on Sat., Apr. 12 at Randolph-Macon. Opening faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm.

The men's lacrosse team fell to Washington & Lee, 11-10 in ODAC action on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 5-4, 0-2 in the ODAC. The Generals improved it mark to 6-4 and 2-0 in conference play.

W&L won in both shots (50-39) and groundballs (42-40). The Maroons were 10-of-23 on face-offs and were successful in 15-of-21 clear attempts. The Generals have won two of the last three meetings but Roanoke owns a 23-18 advantage in the all-time series.

Tied 2-2 at the end of one, Roanoke owned the second period as they scored four of the five goals to give them a 6-3 advantage at the half. Roanoke scored first to open the second half as Pat March scored off an assist from Adam Ariosa to give Roanoke a 7-3 lead with 12:50 remaining in the third.
