George Washington Drops One-Goal Duel at Duquesne
PITTSBURGH - Meghan Frederick's goal with 9:52 remaining in the match broke a 13-13 tie and Liz Fey's free position goal turned out to be the game-winner as Duquesne earned its first Atlantic 10 Conference victory of the season in a hard-fought battle against George Washington 15-14 at Cupples Stadium.
Kathleen McNish had a game and season-high eight points and Ashley Wood recorded her fifth hat trick of the season. Mollie Montgomery led DU with four ground balls. Caitlin Carducci earned her first win in goal.
GW was led by Kristin Karsch with three goals and an assist.
The Colonials got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first 81 seconds of the match before Janna Faulkner, on an assist from McNish, got the Dukes on the board at the 26:34 mark.
After GW's Mia Breheny scored, DU tied the contest at 3-3 on back-to-back goals from Sarah Cates and Shannon Hadaway.
After the Colonials Hayley McDonough gave GW a 4-3 lead, head coach Mike Scerbo replaced Liz Walker with Carducci at the keeper position.
With 4:31 remaining in the first half, a Wood goal tied the game at 7-7 and McNish gave the Dukes their first lead 21 seconds later. Fey would add to the Duquesne lead and Frederick's would find the back of the net with 0.8 seconds left in the first half to give Duquesne a 10-7 halftime lead.
Sarah Carson opened up the second half scoring 34 second in to give DU an 11-7 advantage.
Both teams would exchange a pair of scored before the Colonials scored five consecutive goals as Taylor Donohue capped the GW run to tie the match at 13-13 with 10:38 left in regulation.
The score stayed tied less than a minute as Frederick's goal broke the tie and Fey's free position goal gave the Dukes a 15-13 lead. Karsch scored her third goal of the afternoon with 4:39 to play to get George Washington within one goal, but DU would only allow GW to get off one shot the rest of the way as the Dukes' had complete ball control until the horn sounded.
An excellent crowd of over 200 people cheered Duquesne (4-7, 1-1) in their home-opener of the 2008 season.
The Dukes' next match will be Sunday at noon against Richmond at Cupples Stadium.

PITTSBURGH, PA – George Washington women's lacrosse scored four unanswered goals to even the game at 13-13 with 10:38 remaining, but Duquesne netted the game-winning goal with 5:34 left to down the Colonials, 15-14, in an Atlantic 10 match at Rooney Field Friday afternoon.
Trailing 13-9 with less than 20 minutes to play, sophomore Taylor Donohue (Villanova, PA/Radnor) and senior Laura Wunk (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) each scored two goals in a span of one minute 48 seconds to help GW tie the contest, 13-13, with more than 10 minutes left.
Duquesne's Megan Frederick gave her team the lead for good with a goal 46 seconds later and Liz Fey scored the game-winner with 5:34 remaining to help the Dukes improve to 4-7 overall, 1-1 in conference play.
Senior Kristin Karcsh (Kennett Square, PA/Bishop Shanahan) tallied her third goal of the game at the 4:39 mark, but the Colonials couldn't convert their lone shot attempt with 75 seconds to play to suffer their second straight one-goal loss and fall to 3-8 overall, 1-2 in league play. Three of GW's last five games against Duquesne have been one-goal losses.
Donohue scored back-to-back goals in a span of 58 seconds to give GW its final lead of the game, 7-6, with 5:03 left in the first half.
