Goal with 11 Seconds Left Lifts #16 Brown over Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kyle Hollingsworth's goal with 11 seconds left gave the Brown men's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over Yale in an Ivy League showdown at Reese Stadium that was also the Bears' sixth straight victory.
Like most games in this ancient series, it was tight the entire way. The lead changed hands four times and the score was tied at five different moments. This was the sixth time in the last seven games that a Brown-Yale game had been decided by a goal. This one was more than likely decided by extra-man opportunities. The Bears (7-2, 2-0 Ivy) were 3-for-4 with the EMO while Yale (2-6, 0-4) was blanked on four attempts.
The loss spoiled another sparkling effort by Gregory DuBoff, who won 16 of 19 faceoffs and dominated another talented league opponent. Other than the draws, the stats were close. Brown had the edge in shots (34-30) while Yale had more ground balls (29-25).
Brown's Thomas Muldoon led all scorers with four goals, while Brendan Gibson (3 goals) and Kyle Washabaugh (2) had good showings for the Elis.
Both goalies played very well. Yale senior George Carafides stopped 10 shots while Brown's Jordan Burke had 11.
Jack Walsh picked up an easy one to give the Bears a 1-0 lead one minute into the game. The junior attacker grabbed a loose ball after a Carafides save and had an open net to toss it into from the edge of the crease.
Michael Karwoski evened things at 9:23 of the first when he used Davis Lindsey pick, made a few shifty moves on a defender and then sent a low bouncer past Burke.
Yale's Jerome Arnold hit the net for the last tally of the opening frame. The sophomore midfielder fired a low, 15-footer and the Elis took a 2-1 lead into the second period.
The Elis made it a two-goal lead just 1:07 into the second when Tyler Castertano grabbed a ground ball after a failed clear deep in the Brown end and then flipped a quick pass to Washabaugh, the senior attacker who was heading for the net. Washabaugh uncoiled and let go a low blazer past Burke.
Brown returned the favor by converting a Yale turnover at midfield and cutting the deficit to one. Carey Collins quickly turned the miscue into offense as he fed Muldoon, who had a relatively easy 10-footer at 11:53.
The visitors took advantage of a Yale slashing penalty with the game's first extra-man goal. Muldoon notched his second of the night with a high shot to the corner at 6:36 that evened the score at 3-3.
Brown got another EMO and cashed it in again to grab its first lead since 1-0. Brady Williams also went high on Carafides with 4:08 left in the second.
The Bears, who outshot Yale 17-6 in the second, made it three-for-three with the extra man and enjoyed their largest lead of the night at two goals on Muldoon's third of the game with 41 seconds left. Brown's fourth straight goal could have had a huge deflating effect on the Bulldogs, but the home team got a quick one back.
Karwoski sent a perfect lead pass to Gibson near the edge of the circle. The sophomore attacker was spinning while being knocked down and managed to flip a shot while falling back with eight seconds left before the intermission.
Yale tied the score at 5-5 just seven seconds into the second half as DuBoff won another draw and sprinted into the Brown end. The senior midfielder spotted Washabaugh open on the left wing and flipped him a perfect pass to set up a shot. Washabaugh fired the ball past Burke's stick.
Andrew Feinberg one-timed a pass from behind the net at 12:55 to give the Bears the lead back at 6-5.
