ITHACA, N.Y. -- Sixth-ranked Ithaca used a 6-1 fourth-quarter scoring spree Saturday to rally past Nazareth for a 10-9 men's lacrosse victory in Empire 8 Conference action.
Ithaca's Tim Pfeffer (Penfield HS/Penfield, NY) scored unassisted with just :08 left in the game to give the Bombers their first and only lead of the game. Ithaca improved to 10-1 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8. Nazareth, ranked 11th nationally, is 5-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Nazareth had a five-goal lead, 7-2, early in the third quarter and still was ahead 8-4 heading into the fourth quarter. Ithaca stormed back to score four straight times to open the fourth quarter to tie the score at 8-8 with seven minutes left.
Nazareth regained the lead on a goal by Matt Aloi (Jamesville-DeWitt/Jamesville, NY) with 4:35 to play, but Ithaca tied the score again on a man-up goal by Alec Siefert (Duxbury, Mass.) with 3:34 to go. Each team had scoring chances in the last three minutes, but Ithaca was able to control the ball over the final two minutes to set the stage for Pfeffer's goal, his ninth of the season.
Nazareth took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of two goals from Aaron Civalier (Penfield HS/Rochester, NY) and one from Erinn O'Hara (Camillus, NY). Civalier scored again in the second quarter as did freshman attackman Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (Orcahrd Park, NY) as Nazareth extended its lead to 5-1. Freshman Corey Remoli (Voorhees HS/Asbury, NJ) scored twice to open the second half as Nazareth extended its lead to 7-2. Goals by Brandon Rose (Rush-Henrietta HS/Rochester, NY) and Matt Cutter (Needham, Mass.) enabled Ithaca to close to within 7-4, but Aloi scored for Nazareth with just :03 left in the third to give Nazareth a four-goal lead again.
In the fourth quarter, Ithaca's Logan Bobzien (Centennial, Colo.) helped spearhead the Bomber comeback as he scored two goals and assisted on two others. Cutter also had two assists.
