Tigers Down Denison on Day 1 of Heron Draw

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Colorado College women's lacrosse team defeated Denison University 16-6 today, in game two of the Heron Draw. The Tigers improved to 7-2 overall, while the Big Red fell to 2-5 on the season.

Colorado College senior Mallory Newton (Darien/Darien, Conn.) led all scorers with five goals, while sophomore Kristin Rider (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) tallied two goals and two assists. Junior Alexa Dougherty (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) notched three goals, and classmate Natalie Abel (Lakeside School/Vashon Island, Wash.) and first-year Gioia Garden (Hawken School/Shaker Heights, Ohio) each added two for the Tigers.

The Big Red was led by first-year Kelly Vogt's (Hawken School/Gates Mills, Ohio) two tallies, and a goal and as assist from senior Quinn Simmons (Medina/Medina, Ohio).

The Tigers jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead, from which the Big Red would never recover. Newton tallied the first two goals for Colorado College during the run, followed by goals from Rider, Dougherty, and first-year Lindsay Chan (Miramonte/Orinda, Calif.).

Denison got on the board with seven minutes left to play in the first half, as Simmons set up Vogt for the score. Vogt netted her second goal on a free position shot with 4:28 remaining, cutting her team's deficit to 5-2, but the Tigers answered with two more goals to end the stanza, and took a 7-2 advantage into halftime.

Colorado College outscored the Big Red 9-4 in the second half. Rider and Newton opened the period's scoring with back-to-back goals in the first 2:11 of action, putting the Tigers up 9-2.

Denison sophomore Sara Langsam (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied at the 25:38 mark, and Simmons netted a free position shot to cut the lead to six at 20:41, but the Big Red would not get closer.

Denison's junior goalkeeper Amanda Wilson (Western Reserve/Hudson, Ohio) collected 18 saves, as Colorado College outshot the Big Red 44-17. Junior Jess Van Doren (Boise/Boise, Idaho) stopped six shots for the Tigers.

Both teams will be in action again tomorrow, April 6, on McCooey Field. Colorado College will faceoff against Lycoming (6-4) at 11:00 a.m., followed by Denison taking on host No. 13 William Smith (7-0) at 1:30 p.m.
