Golden Lions Roar Past Dominican
Brookhaven, NY -- Melanie Burgos (Coram, NY) led all scorers with 6 points (3G, 3A) as Dowling defeated the Dominican Chargers 20-3 at Golden Lions Field. The win improves Dowlings record to 5-3 as Dominican drops to 1-7.
Dowling controlled the ball for most of the first half. Lauren Marra (New Hyde Park, NY) opened up the scoring as she deposited a feed from Burgos 1:17 into the game to start a 10-0 Golden Lions run. Kelly Cefalu (East Islip, NY) recorded a hat trick during the run and Burgos scored 2 of her 3 goals. Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY) put the Chargers on the board at 2:57 to close out the first half scoring and cut the Dowling lead to 10-1 going to the locker room.
The second half was more of the same. Kristen Matos (Deer Park, NY) scored the first two goals as 7 different Golden Lions found the back of the net. Dowling dominated all statistical team categories out shooting the Chargers 48-8, holding an overwhelming advantage on ground balls 70-17, and holding their own at the face-off circle 20-5.
Vanessa Moreira (Selden, NY) was all over the field, as she finished the day with 3 goals, 1 assist, 12 ground balls, 10 caused turnovers and 6 draw controls. Cefalu, finished with 3 goals, 1 assist and 10 ground balls. Samantha Messineo (Shirley, NY) chipped in with 4 assists.
Dowling returns to action Wednesday, April 9th, hosting conference foe St. Thomas Aquinas at 4:00 PM.
