Griffin Tallies Five Points as Bentley Tops Assumption
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the way for Bentley in a 15-7 win over Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Multi-Sport Stadium. Junior Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) scored three goals and senior Liz Goddard (Acton/Acton-Boxborough HS) added four points for the Falcons, who evened their record at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Greyhounds fell to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the NE-10.
After trading goals early, Assumption jumped out to a 4-2 lead with a trio of unanswered goals from junior Shannon Howard (Norfolk), freshman Erin Theriault (Feeding Hills) and junior Meaghan Gallagher (Newton). Bentley came back to tie the game on a goal from junior All-America Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover/North Andover HS) and take a 5-4 lead on a strike from Griffin. Sophomore Emily Morrell (Bethany, Conn.) scored for the Greyhounds to tie the game with six minutes to go before halftime, but after that point the Falcons netted six straight goals to put the game out of reach in an 11-minute stretch that spanned halftime.
Freshman Leigh Tedeschi (Duxbury/Duxbury HS) kicked off that spurt, putting Bentley in the lead for good when she put away a pass from Griffin with 4:33 to go before halftime. Griffin scored the eventual game-winner with 1:16 on the clock in the first, giving the Falcons an 8-5 lead at the break.
Bentley limited Assumption to two goals in the second half with freshman Becca Kelley (Westfield) and Howard accounting for the only shots that eluded sophomore goalie Christina Guglielmo (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven HS), who made a career-high 20 saves to earn the win. Senior Lauren Matysiak (Holden) stopped 23 shots in the other crease for the Greyhounds.
The Falcons held a 41-34 edge in shots and a 38-27 advantage in shots on goal. In addition to her game-high five points, Griffin won six draw controls and picked up four ground balls for Bentley.
Howard led Assumption with two goals and an assist and Gallagher contributed a pair of scores for the Greyhounds.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, returning home for a non-conference tilt with fourth-ranked Adelphi at 1:00 p.m.
