Cortland Dispatches Fredonia State
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Rachel Cornwell (Fairport) scored a career- high six goals, and sophomore Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) scored the first three goals of her Cortland career to lead the Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 14-4 win versus Fredonia St. in the SUNYAC opener for the Red Dragons. Cortland improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Blue Devils fell to 4-3 and 0-2.
Sophomore Jessie Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) added three goals and an assist, and juniors Abby Simpson (Kings Park) and Danielle Torre (Massapequa) scored one goal each for Cortland. Cornwell and Mahoney had one assist apiece. Sophomore goalie Deanne Abell (Fulton/ G. Ray Bodley) made nine saves to earn the win.
Senior Christie Zaganiaczyk (Lancaster) led the Blue Devils with three goals. Senior Stephanie Maderer (Orchard Park) scored a goal, while sophomores Emily Reichert (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta), Katie Monaghan (Fairport) and Valerie Snider (Spencerport) and freshman Laura Culhane (Rochester/Gates-Chili) contributed one assist apiece. Senior goalie Sarah Wright (Rochester/Irondequoit) stopped five shots.
The game was close early on with Fritz giving the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead at 20 minutes, four seconds into the first half. Zaganiaczyk answered with two goals for the Blue Devils and Fredonia St. led 2-1 at the 14:16 mark. Cortland responded with the final six goals of the half, four by Cornwell, to secure a 7-2 lead at the intermission.
Zaganiaczyk netted her third of the game and team-high 14th of the season 52 seconds into the second half, but Fritz netted her team- best 30th of the season and Cornwell followed with her fifth of the game to make it 9-3 with 23:34 left. Maderer scored off Snider's assist at 14:57 to pull Fredonia St. to within 9-4. Cortland, however, closed the game with the final five goals including the last three from Mahoney.
