No. 12 UMBC Beats Binghamton in American East

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Sophomore attackman Matt Latham scored a career-high five goals to lead No. 12 UMBC (7-3, 2-0 AE) Binghamton (2-5, 0-2 AE) in an America East Conference men's lacrosse game Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The loss is the Bearcats' fourth straight and fourth against a nationally-ranked opponent this season.

Senior midfielder Terry Kimener added three goals and sophomore attackman Chris Jones added three assists to lead the Retrievers. Sophomore midfielder Steve Carlson (Penn Yan, N.Y.) had two goals and sophomore Chris Welch (Skaneateles, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist to lead Binghamton. Sophomore Andy Cook (Vestal, N.Y.) and senior Stephen Smith (Canandaigua, N.Y) added a goal apiece to round out the scoring for the Bearcats.

UMBC led 2-1 after the first quarter. The Retrievers got out to a 2-0 lead, before Carlson put Binghamton on the board at the 9:01 mark on an assist from Welch. Latham scored twice in the 1:56 of the second quarter as UMBC shutout the host Bearcats 3-0 and forged ahead 5-1 headed into halftime. The visiting Retrievers outshot BU 21-9 in the first half of play.

The Retrievers stretched their lead to 6-1 at the 13:38 mark of the third on Latham's fourth score of the evening off the assist from Jones. Carlson, the 2007 America East Rookie of the Year, stemmed the UMBC run with a score just 44 seconds later and ignited a 3-0 Bearcat run to end the third.

Welch and Cook added scores to cut the deficit to 6-4 as the Binghamton momentum grew headed into the final 15 minutes of action.

The visiting Retrievers, however, quickly collected themselves scoring three times in the first 5:26 of the quarter and using a 4-0 spurt to put the game out of reach. UMBC's two-time All American, Kimener, solved the nation's 14th-ranked defense with three unassisted tallies in the final period.

Junior goalie Larry Kline (Beverly, Mass.) turned in a solid performance in between the pipes for BU finishing with eight saves to his credit. Kline's counterpart, junior Retriever goalie Jeremy Blevins, delivered a strong effort as well with nine saves for his seventh win of the season.

Binghamton hosts Colgate on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the season.
