Lycoming Defeats Colorado College at Heron Draw
GENEVA, N.Y.-The Lycoming College women's lacrosse team defeated Colorado College 13-12 this afternoon, on the second day of the Heron Draw. The Lady Warriors improved to 7-4 overall, while the Tigers fell to 7-3 on the season.
Eleven Lady Warriors recorded at least one point in the victory. Senior Megan Wallenhorst (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) led the Lycoming offense with three goals and three assists, while senior Heather Suit (Broadneck/Annapolis, Md.) tallied a goal and two helpers, and junior Sarah Wingerden (Pal-Mac/Macedon, N.Y.) added two goals.
For the Tigers it was first-year Gioia Garden (Hawken School/Shaker Heights, Ohio) leading the way with three tallies and an assist, and senior Mallory Newton (Darien/Darien, Conn.) with two goals and a helper. Junior Alexa Dougherty (Lexington/Lexington, Mass.) notched two goals, while sophomore Kristin Rider (Wilton/Wilton, Conn.) chipped in three assists.
The Lady Warriors needed less than four minutes to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Junior Crystal Cody (Irondequoit/Rochester, N.Y.) scored, sandwiched by two Wallenhorst tallies. The Tigers got on the board with 20 minutes, 28 seconds to play in the first half, thanks to sophomore Ginny Rider (Collegiate School/Manakin Sabot, Va.). She was set up by Kristin Rider.
Lycoming went on to net three unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead with 14:32 left on the clock. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, giving the Lady Warriors an 8-4 halftime advantage.
Colorado College came on strong in the second half. Garden started the Tigers with a goal just seven seconds into the period, cutting their deficit to 8-5. Lycoming responded with a three-goal run with tallies from sophomore Megan McIntyre (Mercy/Baltimore, Md.), Wallenhorst, and Wingerden.
The Tigers answered with three goals of their own, again cutting their deficit to three, 11-8. Newton notched back-to-back tallies, followed by one from Dougherty at the 8:37 mark.
After a Suit score for the Lady Warriors, Colorado College netted three more to cut Lycoming's lead to 12-11 with 3:42 left to play. Wingerden notched one more for Lycoming, which proved to be the game-winner, with 2:18 remaining. Dougherty found the back of the net for the Tigers at 1:01, and took one more shot in the final seconds, but could not get it past Lady Warrior senior goalkeeper Kristina Peacock (Webster-Thomas/Webster, N.Y.).
Peacock finished with 20 saves, while junior Tiger goalie Jess Van Doren (Boise/Boise, Idaho) collected 10.
