Temple Stays Perfect in the A-10 with Win at UMass
AMHERST, Mass. - A pair of three-goal second half runs keyed Temple to a 12-9 win over the UMass women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The Owls remained perfect in Atlantic 10 play this season improving to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in conference action, while UMass falls to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the league. Kathleen Typadis led UMass with three goals, while Whitney Richards, Berkley Summerlin and Chelsea Rosiek each posted hat tricks for Temple.
UMass will return to action next Friday at Saint Joseph's (4:00 PM) before heading to La Salle on Sunday (Noon).
Both teams started the game scoring a pair of goals each. Typadis scored the game's opening goal and the Minutewomen went up by two after Jackie Rosenzweig caused a turnover, picked up a groundball, and ran the length of the field for her first career goal.
UMass took a 5-2 lead after a three-goal run capped by Kaytlin McCormick's team leading 24th goal of the season with 12:52 to play in the half.
The Owls scored four of the next five goals including a pair from Summerlin which tied the game at 6-6 with just under five minutes to go in the opening stanza. Typadis notched her second goal of the first half with six second to go after the Minutewomen ran off nearly two minutes to set up the play giving UMass a 7-6 halftime lead.
It was all Temple after the intermission, however, as the Owls scored six second half goals to just two for UMass. Temple started the second half with a three-goal spurt to go up 9-7 in the first nine minutes of play.
UMass responded with goals from Holly Drown and Typadis to tie the game at 9-9 with 18:47 remaining in regulation, but the Owls controlled possession for the final 15 minutes of the game scoring three goals in that time frame.
Temple's leading scorer for the season, Whitney Richards scored two of the final three goals for the Owls giving her 29 for the season. The Owls called time out with 6:50 to play and ran off four minutes before Richards scored her third goal of the game.
Statistically, the Minutewomen held the edge in shots (21-19), groundballs (10-8) and draw controls (13-10). UMass committed a season-low eight turnovers while forcing Temple into 12 miscues.
Colleen Speth made three saves in goal for UMass, while Jessica Colucci earned the win for Temple playing the second half in place of Bridget McMullen. Colucci made six saves while McCullen made three.
With two draw controls in the game, Typadis is now the all-time leader at UMass with 104.

Down 7-6 at halftime, TU outscored the Minutewomen 6-2 in the second stanza to earn the win. The Owls are off to their best start since the 1998 season with an 8-3 overall record and 5-0 mark in Conference play. UMass drops to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the A-10.
Nicole Caniglia had two goals, while Brittany Hoffman had one goal and one assist. Hillary Richards dished two assists.

Just when it seemed the teams would go into the locker room deadlocked, UMass Kathleen Typadis found the back of the net with just six seconds left to make it 7-6 in favor of UMass at halftime.
