Carter Propels #4 Adelphi to 17-13 Win Over Bentley
WALTHAM, Mass. – Freshman Kaitlyn Carter (Mineola, N.Y.) tallied five goals and two assists to lead Adelphi to a 17-13 win over Bentley in Division II women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at the Bentley lacrosse field. The Panthers, ranked fourth in the latest IWLCA/Under Armour Division II poll, remained unbeaten this season at 7-0, while the Falcons fell to 4-5.
With Adelphi facing a 10-8 deficit early in the second half, Carter scored four straight goals to pull the Panthers into a two-goal lead they never relinquished. Freshman Michelle Ceraso (Massapequa, N.Y.) added three goals and two assists for Adelphi and sophomores Danielle Kafarski (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and Allison Tumulty (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and senior Megan Metelenis (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) each netted hat tricks.
Bentley matched the Panthers' efforts in the first half and emerged with a 9-8 lead at the break. After Tumulty and Ceraso struck first for Adelphi, junior All-America Alyssa Ritchie (North Andover/North Andover HS) helped even the score, setting up classmate Kim Morris (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs HS) for a goal then converting a free-position shot to tie the game. The Panthers then netted three straight before senior Beth Gendron (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS) scored the first of her team-high four goals for the Falcons that was soon answered by Ceraso to put Adelphi on top of a 6-3 score.
Bentley came back to tie again with Morris striking before junior Jaclyn Griffin (Barrington, Ill./Barrington HS) netted two straight the even the score at six with ten minutes to go in the first. Ceraso and junior Rachel Ray (Rocky Point, N.Y.) restored a two-point edge for the Panthers, but after Gendron scored to bring Bentley within one, senior Liz Goddard (Acton/Acton-Boxborough HS) tied the game on a free-position shot and Gendron gave the Falcons the lead with a free-position goal of her own with just over four minutes to go until halftime.
Senior Bridget Fitzgerald (Winchester/Winchester HS) put in a free-position shot to open the second, but Carter then netted her four straight to kick off a 6-0 Adelphi run that Ceraso capped with the eventual game-winning goal to put the Panthers up 14-10 with 17:25 left in the game. Gendron and Ritchie scored to get the Falcons back within three with 8:33 to go, but Bentley got no closer as sophomore goalie Caitlin Fitzpatrick (Port Washington, N.Y.) earned the win with a 10-save performance for Adelphi.
The Falcons are back in action on Friday at 7:00 p.m., hosting the only other unbeaten team in Division II, top-ranked defending national champion C.W. Post.
