No. 17 Wesleyan Falls to No. 11 Babson

Middletown, Conn. -- Demonstrating why it averages more than 15 goals a game this season, Babson (9-1), ranked 11th nationally, got its offense going early against Wesleyan (5-4), ranked 17th, with three goals in the opening 7:22 of the contest which ended 15-6 Babson's favor. The visiting Beavers moved out to a 6-2 advantage at halftime, as six different players caught the twine for Babson in the first 30 minutes.

Things were a bit different in the second period as senior Anita Martignetti asserted herself with numerous strong runs through the Wesleyan defense to connect on four more goals, three of them assisted, giving her five in the contest and 27 on the year. Top goal-getter sophomore Anna Collins added a pair in the game to up her figure to 34 this season while sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill picked up a hat trick along with a pair of assists, bringing her goal total to 29 and her point total to 36 as she ranks third on the squad behind Collins (43) and Martignetti (40).

While the Babson offense was in high gear, freshman goaltender Sara Macary showed why her save percentage was nearly 60 on the season, stopping 16 shots, 13 of them in the second half as Wesleyan tried desperately to pick up the slack to get back into the contest. Senior Sophia Kim had a hat trick for the Cardinals, scoring half the team's goals in improving her season total to 17, tying for second on the squad. But Babson, after scoring six of the first seven goals in the second period for an almost insurmountable 12-3 lead with 17:06 to play, kept the Cardinals under control while evening the all-time series at three games apiece.

Babson gets back to NEWMAC play Tues. April 18 at MIT while Wesleyan is off until Sat., April 12 when it faces NESCAC rival Colby on the road.
