Saint Leo Falls to No. 9 Wingate in Deep South Play
Wingate, N.C.----The ninth-ranked Wingate University lacrosse team scored nine consecutive goals spanning both halves to overcome an early deficit and defeat Saint Leo (Fla.) University 13-7 in Deep South Lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field. Wingate improves to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the DSC. Saint Leo falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in the DSC.
Senior midfielder Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) led the Wingate offense with three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Bryan Egan (Fairfax, Va.) also had three goals for the Bulldogs. Senior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) added two goals and two assists. Redshirt junior midfielder Mark Hodsdon (Hilton Head, S.C.) chipped in with three assists.
For Saint Leo, junior attack Benjamin Brigham (Scituate, Mass.) led the Lions with four goals and an assist. Three different players added a goal for Saint Leo.
The Lions scored the first two goals of the game, the first from junior attack Chris Storrie (Syracuse, N.Y.) and the second from freshman midfielder Tommy Bryant (Millersville, Md.) at the 10:03 mark. Bulldog junior attack Greg Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) notched the first Wingate goal at the 7:57 mark. SLU junior midfielder Mark Dargon (Newton, Mass.) scored with 1:10 remaining in the period to give the Lions a 3-1 lead.
Costello and Wingate freshman midfielder Seth Crowell (Pfafftown, N.C.) scored the only two goals of the second period, tying the game at 3-3 heading into intermission.
The Bulldogs outscored the Lions 6-0 in the third period. Junior attack Ryan Otterblad (Dumfries, Va.) got the scoring started at the 11:47 mark. Egan and Torkington would score the game's next six goals, with each racking up three. Torkington's tallied his final goal three minutes into the fourth quarter, capping the 9-0 run.
Brigham scored a goal at the 9:25 mark to end the Wingate spurt. Costello and senior midfielder David Olliver (Charlotte, N.C.) responded with goals 14 seconds apart to make it 12-4 at the 5:09 mark. Brigham would score three of the game's final four goals in the last 4:28. Wingate senior midfielder Bob Chinn (Mooresville, N.C.) tacked on a goal the Bulldogs, making the final 13-7.
Wingate held a 29-28 advantage in shots, while Saint Leo held a 20-18 edge in shots on goal. The Lions collected 49 ground balls compared to Wingate's 41. The Bulldogs were two-for-three on extra man opportunities while Saint Leo was zero-for-four.
Bulldog senior goalie David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) racked up 13 saves while allowing only four goals. Saint Leo sophomore goalie DJ Garry (Greenwood, Ind.) collected five saves on the afternoon. He gave up 13 goals in 60 minutes of work.
Wingate returns to action Saturday, with its final home game of the season against DSC foe Catawba at 2:00 p.m. Saint Leo returns to action Friday, when they host Rollins College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Saint Leo jumped out to an early lead, scoring the opening two goals of the game and eventually leading 3-1 after one quarter of play. Wingate then went on a run of unanswered goals, netting twice in the second quarter to tie the game at three at half-time.
