Bayhawks Place Powell on "Did not Report" List Powell Selected First Overall in 2004 MLL Collegiate Draft Baltimore, Md. – The Baltimore Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) have placed attackman Michael Powell, their first overall pick from this year’s MLL Collegiate Draft, on the Major League Lacrosse “Did Not Report” list, it has been announced by Bayhawks General Manager Jay Pivec. The Bayhawks had asked Powell to report in time for the team’s July 10 game against the Rochester Rattlers at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium at Towson University. As of Tuesday afternoon, Powell had not completed the necessary paperwork that was required by Major League Lacrosse rules, which meant that the Bayhawks could not activate the former Syracuse University attackman. Subsequently, Powell was placed on the “Did Not Report” list and will not be allowed to play during the remainder of the 2004 Major League Lacrosse season. “The Bayhawks are extremely disappointed Michael will not be playing this year,” Pivec said. “We are even more disappointed for the fans of Baltimore, who have already had to endure this type of situation twice with its NFL and Major League Baseball franchises this year.” Selected with the first overall pick in the 2004 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, Powell helped Syracuse University win the 2004 NCAA Division I championship with a 14-12 win over Navy. Completing a season where he set a personal best with 89 points, Powell was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring one goal with a career-high five assists in the title game. Powell finished his Syracuse career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 307 points on 150 goals with 157 assists. He became the first player in Syracuse history and the fourth in NCAA men’s lacrosse history to earn first-team All-America honors in four consecutive seasons. He was also the first two-time recipient of the Tewaaraton Trophy, which he earned as the nation’s best lacrosse player during his junior and senior seasons. In addition to his college success, Powell has also been a winner at the international level, helping the United States win the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship. He was the team’s second-leading scorer with 27 points, including a team-high 20 assists. Powell was one of five Syracuse players to be taken in the MLL Collegiate Draft. Midfielder Sean Lindsay was selected in the first round by Rochester, while midfielder Steve Vallone was Philadelphia’s third round selection. Fellow midfielder Kevin Dougherty, who scored a career-high five goals in the Orange’s semifinal win over Johns Hopkins, was the Rattlers’ pick in the third round. Attackman Brian Nee rounded out the Syracuse selection by becoming a Boston Cannon in the fourth round. “The Bayhawks organization hopes that our fans will continue the outstanding support they have given us for the rest of the season,” Pivec said. The Bayhawks return home for the first time in nearly a month on Saturday night, hosting the Rattlers in a National Division match-up. To make room on the 30-man roster for the University of Delaware graduate, the Bayhawks released defenseman Zack Burke. Along with Alrich, defenseman Blaise Fletcher was placed on the league’s Non-Lacrosse Inactive list. Fletcher was selected in the fifth round of the June 3 draft by the three-time defending National Division champions. Alrich was selected by the Bayhawks with their fourth-round selection during last month’s Collegiate Draft after being named first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association. After leading the Blue Hens in scoring with 34 goals and 12 assists, Alrich was one of three CAA players to be taken in the draft. Towson University midfielder Ben DeFelice was selected by the Philadelphia Barrage, while fellow Tiger midfielder Drew Pfarr was taken by the Boston Cannons in the fifth and final round. Alrich finished his Delaware career with 83 goals and 14 career hat tricks. He helped the Blue Hens finish the season with a 10-6 record and a berth in the CAA Tournament semifinals. In addition, the Bayhawks activated midfielder Kip Fulks from the 15-day injured reserve list. Fulks was placed on injured reserve following the Bayhawks’ 19-18 overtime win over Philadelphia on June 19 after injuring his hamstring. Fulks scored his second career two-point goal in the win over the Barrage. Fulks has scored two goals, including a two-pointer, with one assist in four games this season. After nearly three weeks, the Bayhawks (3-2) return to action on Saturday night, hosting the Rochester Rattlers (3-3) in the third and final meeting between the two teams during the regular season.
