Seven Standouts Commit to Nittany Lions for 2006 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., December 1, 2004 - The Penn State men's lacrosse team has announced Wednesday that seven prominent high school lacrosse players have committed to the Nittany Lions for the early signing period. The Nittany Lions will be looking to replace eight seniors who will be graduating at the end of the spring. Rob Forster of Jenkintown, Pa., is the only attackman to commit out of the seven. He was first team all-state and first team All-Catholic League at LaSalle high school. Forster tallied 112 points in his high school tenure and is LaSalle's leading scorer. Last season LaSalle high school won the Pennsylvania State Championship. Ryan McAleenan of East Grand Rapids, Mich., earned first team all-state honors and was a three-year starter at midfield in high school. This was a year to be remembered for McAleenan as his squad won the 2004 Michigan state championship while he earned offensive MVP honors in the championship game. McAleenan was also a four-year receiver and defensive back on the football team and his high school won the 2003 state championship with a 14-0 record. Chris Mulqueen of Glenmoore, Pa., is the second midfielder to sign with the Lions. He was voted first team All-Delaware Valley League after scoring 42 goals and 31 assists this past season at Bishop Shanahan high school. Mulqueen's team was crowned Delaware Valley League Champions in 2003. The final midfielder to sign was Matt Warner of Geneva, N.Y. He played all four years with the varsity squad scoring 28 goals and 40 assists in 2004. Warner was named first team all-league and was a two-time Western New York Empire Lacrosse Team honoree. His athletic background also includes three years as quarterback with the football team and three years as a point guard with the basketball team at Geneva. Scott Wengrenovich and Scott Jacobs are the two defensemen who have committed to the Lions. Wengrenovich of Lancaster, Pa., earned first team All-Central Pennsylvania and first team All-Lancaster Lebanon League honors in 2004. His team reached the state semifinals in 2004 and won the District 3 Championship. Wengrenovich also played tight end and linebacker for Hempfield high school. Jacobs was named all-state and was a safety for his football team in St. Marks, Texas. He brings great strength and size with his 6'5" 210 lb. build. Goalkeeper Drew Adams brings an extensive lacrosse background to Penn State. Adams was voted first team all-state, first team All-Delaware County and first team All-Central League this past season. He was also a two-year captain and team MVP for Springfield high school in Springfield, Pa. This past year he recorded four games with 20-plus saves and two shutouts in 2004. "We are very excited about this group of athletes primarily because they are athletes with a great up side," said Coach Thiel. "With the addition of Drew Adams in the cage and Scott Jacobs and Scott Wengrenovich on defense the future is looking bright. On offense, we like the versatility of the group and all are team leaders. These athletes play in championship programs and have the background of being two and three-sport athletes. This group should help Penn State lacrosse immediately get back to the NCAA tournament." The Nittany Lions will be in action on Feb. 5 at 3:00 p.m. when they compete in the Alumni scrimmage. Penn State will open its season when they host Ohio State on Feb. 19 at 1:00 p.m. |
