Princeton, GWLL Foes Highlight Butler's Schedule

Slate includes five home games, including match-up with defending GWLL champ

December 3, 2004

Butler lacrosse coach Stan Ross announced the Bulldogs' schedule for his inaugural season in Indianapolis today (Dec. 3), highlighted by a trip to Princeton and a tough league slate. The schedule includes five games on the Butler campus and match-ups against six teams that at least received votes in last season's final Geico/STX Coaches Poll.

Butler prepares for Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) action with a challenging non-league schedule over the first month of the season. After scrimmaging Denison and Ohio Wesleyan at Dublin Coffman High School in Ohio, Feb. 12, the team takes to the road to face Duke Feb. 19 in the regular season opener. The game against the Blue Devils is followed by neutral site contests against NCAA Tournament participant Hobart (Feb. 26 at St. Paul's school in Maryland) and Holy Cross (March 6 at Boys' Latin School in Maryland). Ross enjoyed a stellar prep career at Boys' Latin before lettering four years at Loyola (Md.) College.

"We are very excited about our schedule for the 2005 season," said Ross. "I think our non-conference schedule will help us prepare for the level of competition we will see in the GWLL."

The Bulldogs' home opener is March 16 against Quinnipiac. Three days later the Bulldogs open GWLL play at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish finished the regular season ranked 12th in the nation. Butler hosts first-year GWLL opponent Bellarmine, March 30. The game starts a three-game homestand for the Bulldogs that includes non-league opponent Robert Morris (Apr. 2) and defending GWLL champion Ohio State (Apr. 9).

Butler then heads on the road for the program's first career meeting with perennial power Princeton April 17. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Ross was a defensive assistant with the Tigers when they went 14-1 and won the national championship in 1998. A trip west to GWLL opponents Air Force and Denver (Apr. 22 and 24) finishes the three-game road swing.

Butler concludes the regular season April 29 when league opponent Fairfield comes to Indianapolis.

Ross' first roster at Butler includes 21 returning letterwinners, including six starters. The Bulldogs also welcome arguably the program's most talented recruiting class with 15 new faces. Butler finished the 2004 campaign with a 5-8 record, facing three teams that advanced to the postseason.
