WLax: Mount Saint Mary's Inks Four Players for '06 EMMITSBURG, Md. - Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse head coach Courtney Martinez Connor has announced the signing of four players for her 2006 recruiting class. Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Sara Gallagher (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage Central School), Melanie Schwer (Riva, Md./South River) and Caitlin Preas (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) have signed a National Letter of Intent to enroll at the Mount in 2005-06. "In addition to great stick skills, this maybe our most athletic and aggressive recruiting class," said Martinez Connor. "I believe that the players coming in could make an immediate impact in 2006." Cantanese, a 5-4 midfielder, has played two seasons at St. Anthony's High School. Named a captain for the 2005 season, Cantanese received All-Long Island recognition in 2003 and 2004. Gallagher, a 5-6 midfielder, has tallied 177 goals and 83 assist in her first three seasons at Carthage Central School. She was named an All-American honorable mention in 2004 and earned a Frontier League All-Star nod in each of her first three seasons. Gallagher helped her squad to a 16-3 mark and the Frontier League championship in 2002. "Katelyn has a great vision of the field and a tremendous work ethic," said Martinez Connor. "Sara is a smart player with great dodging ability." Preas, a 5-4 defender, has participated on the Our Lady of Good Councel women's lacrosse team for three seasons and will serve as team captain in 2005. She was named to the all-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) second team in 2003 and 2004 while earning All-County recognition as a sophomore. After posting 22 goals and 10 assists as junior, she helped her team to the WCAC championship that season. Schwer, a 5-7 midfielder, has been a member of the South River women's lacrosse team for two seasons. From the same high school of current women's lacrosse player Jen Davison, Schwer helped her squad to the regular season and East Region championship with a 16-3 record. "Caitlin reminds me of Kim Keene because she is a solid all-around player," said Martinez Connor. "Melanie has a tremendous amount of endurance and is all over the field." |
