WLax: Vermont Signs Four Recruits for 2005-2006 BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont women’s lacrosse program has received commitments from four recruits. Sarah DeStefano (Eliot, Maine), Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario), Jessie Peksa (Salisbury, Md.) and Tori Wasson (Lake Forest, Ill.) have all signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers at UVM. First year head coach Jen Johnson made the announcement today. “We are very excited to have signed such a talented freshman class in the early signing period,” stated Johnson. “Our current team has been undergoing some positive changes this year and we are really evolving as a team. We believe the addition of this freshman class will add even more strength to our program and help us build a winning tradition at Vermont,” continued Johnson. DeStefano is an attack/midfielder from Eliot, Maine and attends Marshwood High School in South Berwick, Maine. As a junior she scored 54 goals and handed out 19 assists. DeSefano earned Western Maine All-Conference First Team honors in 2003 and was named to the Portland Press Herald Maine All-State Lacrosse First Team in 2004. She was also named to the Upper New England Girls Lacrosse team twice and was voted a “Maine High School Lacrosse Player to Watch” the past two seasons. In 2004, DeStefano earned a spot on the Southwestern Maine Activities Association Conference All-Star team and was named to the US Lacrosse Academic All-America squad. Millar, a midfielder, is the first Canadian recruit for the Catamounts. A native of Whitby, Ontario, she is a senior at Sinclair Secondary School. Millar spent three years playing with the Canadian U-19 Women’s National Team. She has guided Sinclair to the LOSSAA District Championship three straight years and also led the Oshawa Blue Knights to the Ontario Summer Games and Provincial Championships in 2004. Also a strong field hockey player, Millar led Sinclair to four straight LOSSA Championships. Peksa hails from Salisbury, Maryland and plays attack at James Bennett High School. As a junior she led James Bennett to the Bayside South Championship and a berth in the Maryland State Eastern Regional Finals. Peksa finished the year leading the team in scoring with 37 goals and added 10 assists. She was named to the US Lacrosse Academic All-America squad as a junior and earned a spot on the Salisbury Daily Times All-Star Lacrosse First Team in 2004. Also a talented volleyball player, Peksa was selected to the Salisbury Daily Times All-Star Volleyball First Team. Wasson, a midfielder, comes to UVM from Lake Forest, Illinois and Lake Forest High School. She was a 2004 High School All-American and led Lake Forest to the Illinois State Championship last season. She earned All-State honors twice and has scored 110 goals in 38 games in two years. Wasson also plays club lacrosse in Ontario and was the Rookie of the Year in the Ontario Women’s Lacrosse U19 League in 2004. Vermont will open the 2005 campaign on February 27th when it faces Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. |
