(Baldo) 2x defending champs stay on top until beaten. Yes - they lost a considerable amount of talent - but they were deep last year and reloaded. (Coyote) My #1. Spots to fill ... and they always do. Three peat? (hoyaboy) Defending champs get the benefit of the doubt to start the season. The Orange are #1. (HU34) Number #1 until they lose ... nuff said ... "Canada and New York State's College Team" ... restocking from their "farm teams" at OCC and the Arrows as per usual ... don't cry for them, Argentina. (jhu7276) Syracuse has restocked, and their culture of winning once more carries them to the top. (Ketch) #1 - There is still plenty of firepower in the defending champion's lineup. That and a strong goaltender who can start the fast break should have the Orange playing again on Memorial Day weekend this year. (Lax Genius) Impressive ability to re-invent themselves year after year despite key departures. (maddog9718) #1. Top tier defense that has been getting better and better since Lelan Rogers got there make Cuse a tough team to beat even w/o the offensive talent. The goalie makes the saves he needs to make. Most fans focus on the offense, but the improved defense is what has led to their success. They need a quarterback on O and to sort out their midfields. I think Daniello can have a big year. I think they have a lot of talent at midfield because of all the red shirts that will play this year. The 2010 team is not the 2009 team, but they have as much talent as anyone, so I give them the nod for winning two in a row. (OCanada) Reigning champs with major holes to fill. They always seem to reload. Who will quarterback the attack? CJ? Midfield took a major hit. Gone are Hardy's pts and vision as well as Abbott and Perrits' neverending hustle. Amidon will have to step up, but who will run with him? Miller and Coleman? Defense looks solid with White and Lade leading the way, along with a Jr goalie who already has two NC rings. (oldbartman) (P33 #1) From last April through Memorial Day, nobody came CLOSE to beating this team. Except Cornell. (Paesan33) #2. Just cuz I've seen Duke and not Syracuse yet. (randyrad) Number 1 until they get beat - Should be an exciting year to see Cody and all of those athletes - Desko has proven to be quite a fine coach with a magician's touch. (Rasheed) Lost some key guys from last year. Goalie play came up big last year in the playoffs. Will be in the thick of things. (sore+old) Lost a lot, but usually reloads well. No title this year, though. (Strannywastheman) Ended on top and will start on top, because that's the way it should be. (Tecumseh) #2 - This is a high ranking for a team that is replacing many departed seniors. The offense will need to gel, but replacing scoring has rarely if ever been a problem for Cuse. They are deep, athletic, and have a ridiculous amount of big game experience on the defensive end of the field. (VTD) #1: SU lost a full GOOD midfield, their QB and their D leader - but the replacements aren't student body volunteers. Very tough schedule, especially on the road. But, by May, the annual Orange coalescence of athletic depth should happen again. (whollymoly) Duke: Last year of the 5th year guys. Could challenge but much bad karma here from the past. (Baldo) Should be #1 - brings back more talent than any other team. Goalie issues and inability to close out the season on Memorial Day with more talent hampers this pick. Looked great against national team. (Coyote) My #2. The 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers of Lax? The Devils might just be able to close the deal in 2010. (hoyaboy) Still working for the elusive National Championship. Blue Devils have as good a chance as anybody. (HU34) Own the "hoodoo" over the Wahoos ... will this be the year to win it ALL? They always find a way to disappoint at season end. (jhu7276) It would not be a shock to see Duke win it all, finally, since they have shown a commitment to doing just that. (Ketch) #3 - Could it be the year that the perennial bridesmaids get to the altar? (Lax Genius) Would have been my #1 if they had put up a better fight against SU last year. Goalie is a big question mark. (maddog9718) #4. Duke's starting 9 is as good as any and maybe better than any. Goalie is a huge question mark with Brady out. Another big question is fatigue in the 5th year players. They own VA, but by year end they were even with UNC. I wonder if they have the necessary depth for the game they play. With the loss of the goalie, I dropped them down. (OCanada) Almost #1 until the goalie situation went into flux. Probably the best attack to start this season. First middies Turri, Schoeffel, and Catalino can and will put up impressive numbers; second line a major? Close D may be the best in the country LSM not bad either. Maybe Coach Danowski will baptize his freshman goalie by fire. (oldbartman) (P33 #5) Yawn. If they couldn't come within 10 of Syracuse with last year's talent, why should they be in the top 3 this year without their starting keeper and entire midfield? (Paesan33) #1. Waited to watch them play Team USA before picking them over Syracuse. (randyrad) The loss of their goalie is huge - they surely have the second best lacrosse player in the nation and a lot of talent all the way around - I'm still not too confident in the coaching and their penchant for caving in the biggest games. (Rasheed) Just a locomotive I don't see anyone stopping this year. Explosive offense, relentless defense with a great stopper. Loads of experience. (sore+old) Is this the year they bust through? Could be. CJ Costabile is a beast, Quinzani can fill it. Coach D takes hits that he shouldn't have to. Still one of the best. (Strannywastheman) Great win over Team USA missing four of their best. So loaded they can start a freshman goalie if they wish. (Tecumseh) #1 - Perhaps the most impressive starting 10 in Division I despite potentially starting a freshman in goal, but talent has not been what's keeping them from a championship the past few years. (VTD) #3: Loads of talent, but the Devils more often than not don't cash it in that well by May. Still, I don't see the goalie issue as being as big a deal as some. Could be #2 or #1 at any point. (whollymoly) Virginia: On paper excellent but lots of experience questions at attack. Goal and defense need to tighten up, too. (Baldo) Loaded - but I question how the attack will develop. Yes SS is an excellent player - but he ran with two AAs last year. He will be the focal point of opponent's D this year. running with all that inexperience at attack limits this pick. (Coyote) My #3. Young attack but very good and midfield dangerous. D must and will improve. Goalie, now a junior, will be more consistent. (hoyaboy) Loaded with talent. The Wahoos will be playing on Memorial Day weekend once again. (HU34) Lock and reload as usual ... always can beat JHU just by walking onto the field ... they are the "Dallas Cowboys of lacrosse" ... concentration lacking at crucial junctures except vs. JHU. (jhu7276) Like Syracuse, always in the mix, no matter what. (Ketch) #2 - The Brattons' ascent continues. (Lax Genius) Inexperienced attack could make or break UVa, but super-talented roster, as usual. (maddog9718) #2. Too many question marks for me at attack, defense, and goalie to rank them higher. The attack should not be as efficient as last year and is inexperienced. The defense last year was not great. The goalie was inconsistent. They have the talent for the FF and to win a title, but the team looks a little unbalanced to me. (OCanada) The offense starts with a great 1-2 punch at midfield with Shamel Bratton and Brian Carroll, keeping defenses honest. Can Rhamel B. stay healthy and contribute? Clausen and Nizolek bring experience. Can Ghitelman be consistent and stop high hard shots this year? (oldbartman) (P33 #6) Tough call- Timms is a tough replacement. No reason though that this team shouldn't be near the top 5 or even inside. (Paesan33) #3. Just cuz they're UVa. (randyrad) My number 4 - with the best player in college lacrosse in Shamel Braton and the top midfield unit, expect the Hoos to compete - Starsia can pull in the horses, but can they gel? (Rasheed) Lost some key people. Need to have Ghitelman really step up this year. (sore+old) Hoos should be a threat to go all the way as usual. English may be be the next Glading. Just wait. (Strannywastheman) Most talent of any team in college lacrosse, but can all the freshmen step up? (Tecumseh) #3 - Perhaps the best returning midfield in the country, but the attack is in transition (will probably be more than OK anyway) and the defense will have to prove itself; otherwise there is no way they're getting around the Orange or the Blue (Devils). (VTD) #2: UVa lost some AAs, but that happens at the top, and Coach S. has never exactly been a bashful recruiter. #2 on the strength of hosting, and having a slightly easier schedule than, Duke. (whollymoly) North Carolina: Primed for a big year. Loss of Burke hurts. Heels need to SHOW US THE MONEY! (Baldo) Talented - can they get it done? (Coyote) My #6. Solid here for now on talent and SOS. Breschi seems to make a difference. I am wait and see on the Heels. Will go 3-0 to start but Navy will test. (hoyaboy) The Tar Heels never seem to live up to their hype. This year might be the exception. (HU34) Bitter does it better ... they are poised to make a run at the final four under Coach Breschi ... another team JHU can't seem to beat year in and year out. (jhu7276) Carolina has a history of not playing up to its talent level. Although others predict otherwise, why should this year be any different? (Ketch) #4 - The Heels will go as far as Billy Bitter carries them. (Lax Genius) Deepest roster (albeit young) UNC has had in a while, in my opinion. Loss of Burke will hurt the Heels. Will the freshman/sophomore mids step up? (maddog9718) #3. In 2009 UNC lost games by one goal to Duke, UVa, and Maryland. They lost an early game to ND by 2 and a late game to Duke by 2. They should be better this year and the others may not be as good. Injuries are taking a toll, though. The loss of Burke off the first midfield and Petracca at attack prevent me from putting them higher. Goalie is a crucial position for them, but they will be better than last year, maybe a lot better. Hunt fought injuries last year, so his loss is not as great as it might have been. Dunster is a player and should become a bigger threat this year. I think UNC is getting a different breed of player now and Breschi can take them to the FF. (OCanada) Stopping Bitter will be every opponent's main goal. Juco transfer Prevost should not be overlooked. Replacing Burke's' passing on the first mid line will be a problem. Walterhoefer's dominance on face-offs is the biggest hole to fill. Defense will be solid. Goalie?? Have a three headed coin? Can Coach Breschi get this team to improve over last year? (oldbartman) (P33 #2) I've got UNC in the top 2, but considering Syracuse's graduation losses, I could easily have the Heels at the top. (Paesan33) #5. Cuz they're not UVa or the Hop. (randyrad) My number 3 - the Heels are loaded and Breschi's immediate impact on recruiting has been ingenious. Look for the Heels to compete for the ACC this year. (Rasheed) This is a team always loaded with talent that never seems to win the big game. This year I think they get the monkey off their backs with Coach Breschi. (sore+old) Heels should make the Final Four this time. Attack is one of the best, Breschi is a leader. Three goalies are all good. Who plays? (Strannywastheman) Coach B, is this the year, or next? Bitter is special. (Tecumseh) #4 - Breschi is raking in the talent, and this year should build on their success from last year. They will need to pick a goalie and find a replacement for Walterhoeffer, but they can play with anyone. (VTD) #5: Loaded with talent, but the Heels haven't yet proven they can close the deal at season's end, they lost a serious X man and have a bit of uncertainty in goal. The ingredients are there, though. (whollymoly) Johns Hopkins: Lots of questions but on paper a good deal of talent. Paper needs to translate to on-field performance. (Baldo) Attack is strong - mid??? I'm not convinced with the D. (Coyote) My #8. Always well coached and they beat teams they are expected to beat. Will go 3-0 into Princeton. If freshmen develop, Hop can be FF. (hoyaboy) A tough regular season schedule prepares the Blue Jays for their annual run at the Final Four. (HU34) I can't put them any higher than #7 right now ... defense and goaltending are HUGE questions, and this team can't beat UVa (as usual), UNC (becoming a yearly loss), Duke, and Cuse. (jhu7276) Like Syracuse and Virginia, the Hop knows what it takes to be king. (Ketch) #7 - They're Hopkins, so they'll be good, but greatness will still elude the Jays in 2010. (Lax Genius) Very talented incoming class. JHU needs consistency in goal to be in the final 4. (maddog9718) #6. As good an attack as any. Question marks everywhere else. The talent is there, but can it be developed in time to make a serious run at the title? This is a glass half full or half empty situation to me. Maybe half full. It would be nice. But with major questions in goal, close D, and midfield, it is hard to rank them any higher. (OCanada) Once again Pietramala has his work cut out for him. Defense HAS to improve over last year. Seniors Drenan and Devore must communicate better. Goalie Gvozden needs consistency or the hook will be quick. Attack is this team's strength, as Boland, Boyle, and Wharton know each other well. Mike Kimmel is the only sure thing at midfield. Who joins him on the first line? Will the Hop get it together? Eventually. (oldbartman) (P33 #4) Really just needs to fill some gaps on D. Shouldn't be an issue. Almost never is! (Paesan33) #4. ... because they're Hopkins. (randyrad) My number 6 - Petro has his work cut out for him - a ton of young talent. Do they have the desire? (Rasheed) Well coached, disciplined, veteran team with an experienced goalie. Like the NY Yankees, if they don't win a NC, they had a bad year. (sore+old) The Pests always seem to find a way into the Final Four. This year is easy: straight down Charles, right on Hamburg. But this year they'll be watching. (Strannywastheman) Could have more talent than all the rest! It's been a while for the Homewood Blues. Is this the year? (Tecumseh) #5 - Ranked behind the three other teams they haven't figured out how to beat the last few years. The attack is deep and can play with anyone. The midfield has incredible potential, but aside from Kimmel is young and unproven. (VTD) #6: Hop has the players, as always, and no one can doubt Coach and his staff. The Jays' schedule is, as always, stiff and wearing, though as an independent they can orchestrate one with only four road games. What's been wrong? IMHO, the Jays need to let their hair down a bit. (whollymoly) Cornell: Lost a lot, but this team seems to always be in the thick of things in spite of this. (Baldo) If the face-off and middies develop, this team could move up the board. First two attackmen can compete with any duo in the country. Return most of the Final Four defense - goalie change should be neutral to positive. (Coyote) My #7. Tambo is a great coach, and I think they may now have a system that develops talent and heart. Huge holes to fill at midfield/leadership. Goalie a question. Will go 5-0 into Virginia. (hoyaboy) It doesn't get any closer then last year's National Championship game. It will be a challenge for the Big Red to rebound from that loss. Also, losing Seibald and Glynn will be hard to overcome. (HU34) RIGHT there last year and could smell the trophy until the "miracle at Foxboro" ... attack is POTENT ... how will they be missing the Mad One this year? (jhu7276) The Big Red's wave of good fortune came to an end last Memorial Day. To quote Herm Edwards, "You play to win the game." Not to run out the clock. (Ketch) #5 - The loss of Siebald will clearly hurt, but Coach Tambroni will keep the Big Red at the top of the Ivy League and well inside the top ten. (Lax Genius) Impressive run to the finals last year. Pannell has great vision; however, Seibald and Glynn are big shoes to fill. (maddog9718) #9. Usually I place Cornell above most other pickers. This year I might be lower. The first middies are gone, and they carried a lot of the water for Cornell. Close D and attack should be fine. I think the midfield will take some work. Goalie is also a question mark. (OCanada) As good as anyone's 1-2 punch, Cornell's Parnell and Hurley will be under increased pressure to produce. Can Lau take a season of punishment as the 3rd attacker? Midfield ... no disrespect, but Lang, Langton, and Ritchie are hardly Siebald, Glynn, and Romero. Defense will be lead by Derkac. Goal is up for grabs. (oldbartman) (P33 #7) That army of two-way middies is gone now, and so is Jake Myers. Fortunately, the underclass has some great experience under its belt. (Paesan33) #9. Still good, but ... they'll be missed. (randyrad) Number 5 - and that's being generous - they simply lost too much - however, Tambroni is a hell of a coach - he brings out the best in his players. (Rasheed) Red comes off a great season that will be tough to reproduce. Should be class of the Ivy, a conference steadily improving. (Strannywastheman) Was the cream but lost to much at midfield to repeat. Must have relived their failed clear all summer, fall, and winter. (Tecumseh) #7 - Midfield was the heart of the team last year and was completely decimated by graduation. Pannell and Hurley remain on attack, but they will have less space to operate this year than last without the opposition having to keep an eye on Glynn and Seibald. Tambroni has shown the ability to develop talent and leadership, so they are still middle of the pack Top 10. (VTD) #4: Somebody stole the midfield. But Coach T. is extremely impressive in his understanding of available personnel and of what wins. Easiest schedule of the top 5, too, though not EASY easy. (whollymoly) Princeton: New coach and staff - lots of unknowns here. (Baldo) Lost a lot of offense - returns a great set of defensive players - but the short stick DMs last year were also excellent, and they are gone. (Coyote) My #4 ... a little high, but " The Year of the Tiger " gives them the nod here. Will we see a new idea at PU now that Coach T has saddled up and headed west? Talent to spare here and backer top shelf so not a big stretch for FF. Will win the Ivy. (hoyaboy) With a new coach and a lot of talented teams in the Ivy League again this year, the Tigers have their work cut out for them. (HU34) New coach ... if this team pulls it together they could be dangerous ... we finally going to see if "aw shucks" was the difference maker ... if they don't play well for the new boss, could be a long year. (jhu7276) It's a new era in Princeton. They drop a bit. (Ketch) #6 - The Tigers will battle it out with Cornell for Ivy League supremacy. (Lax Genius) Talented underclassmen made some noise last year. Can they build on last year's success w/ a new coach? (maddog9718) #8. The Tigers will be in every game or should be. It starts with defense, and they have that. They have an experienced attack but need to find midfielders. With a new coach who likes to move the ball, they should have a more attacking offense. My slotting is partly due to the new look and the new coach. (OCanada) Major changes at PU. Coach Chris Bates is likely to bring a more open offense, which should suit an attack lead by the McBride cousins. Mackenzie, Barnes and Chanenchuk form a good 1st midfield. Tyler Fiorito may be the best goalie in the country. With a solid D in front of him, Princeton has a shot at the Ivy title. (oldbartman) (P33 #3) Would have them higher, but the schedule is so tough that the Tigers will inevitably lose some close games. (Paesan33) #11. Left a full cupboard. (randyrad) Ive got them at #8 - they lost a ton as well as a coach - but my guess is it triggers an emotional spark and Princeton takes the Ivy. (Rasheed) May take time to adjust to new coach. (sore+old) Loss of Coach Tierney is very hard to quantify. Program was on the rise. Will it continue? (Strannywastheman) Soft freshman recruiting class left from Billy. Frosh could be a large distraction to all the older studs! The upperclassmen need to step up and get it done. Coach Bates is great. (Tecumseh) #8 - The defensive talent is remains and the attack is dangerous, but its yet to be seen how the team will adjust to Bates. No one in the Ivy league has a proven midfield so they should have no problem competing for the crown with a unit filled with new guys. (VTD) #7: The question marks are obvious, but the Mcs and Macs can score, and a strong D in front of a good goalie can keep any team in any game. (whollymoly) Maryland: Could challenge as they do have lots of talent. Needs to come together cohesively, though. (Baldo) How many attackmen will run midfield? (Coyote) My #5 ... tough schedule will put them here for now. If midfield develops could be a FF team ... they have everything else. (hoyaboy) A lot of individual talent on attack but never seemed to gel last year. If the attack can get it going as a unit the Terrapins will be dangerous. (HU34) Always conking out as the season progresses ... I don't see them doing much until they can beat JHU ... how long can the alumni take Cottle wallowing in mediocrity? The "year of Yeatman" never materialized. (jhu7276) Time to downsize. The T-Rex attack must go if the Terps are to make it out of the doldrums. (Ketch) #13 - I don't see the Terps getting over the hump this year. (Lax Genius) Perhaps best attack in D1, though Yeatman needs to find his role. Success, in my opinion, will depend on how well they replace Groot and co. at midfield. (maddog9718) #5. The defense should be top tier, especially with the return of Farrell. The attack is established and top tier. The question is the middies. I don't think there is enough there to carry MD to the FF, although it is not out of the question. (OCanada) The attack will be leaned on heavily for scoring. What do you do with Yeatman? The best middie for UM is their face-off/SS-DM Bryn Holmes. Maybe Cummings runs the offensive midfield. Farrell's return to LSM is a positive. A blue collar defense will need to be in sync early. If Phipps is healthy, the Terps are solid between the pipes. (oldbartman) (P33 #8) Boasts wins over Duke and Carolina last year. Most teams can't say that ... Should also get credit for some close losses and returns a lot of talent. (Paesan33) #10. if one or two attackmen can run midfield ... and Farrell is 100%. (randyrad) Who the hell knows? I'm picking them at #7 right now - if Cottle can't pull our a final 4 appearance, expect the grumblings in College Park turn into an all-out revolt. (Rasheed) I think Yeatman will be a beast this year. Good talent around him as well. (sore+old) Put up or pack up time for Dave Cottle? Attack is awesome, providing Yeatman is not starting. Should be the best Terp team in a while. If not, head coaching position needs to be re-thought. (Strannywastheman) Every year at 8th ... loaded on attack. (Tecumseh) #6 - Farrell is back, as is most of the defense. Cottle's roster runs 6+ deep at attack but lacks any serious midfield scoring threat, someone will have to emerge; otherwise I see them as still a step below the top 5. (VTD) #8: Strong in goal and featuring The Amazing Giant Attack, the Terps could, as always, surprise in May. But that's the problem at U. Md. Tournament success has lately been something that would be a surprise. (whollymoly) Hofstra: Been building for a few years now. Is this the year it pays off? (Baldo) I liked their attack before the Ford injury and thought they may be able to go far. Absent Ford, they need a more solid midfield and more depth on D. (Coyote) My #14. A little low maybe because goalie is a question. Card and Lincoln could light it up and move the Dutch higher. With PU, Brown and Hopkins early, that could happen soon. Should win the very balanced and competitive CAA and dance. (hoyaboy) The Flying Dutchmen are typically underrated in the preseason and work their way up the polls. This year they start off with a high ranking and even loftier goals. (HU34) Dutchmen will fly and knock some folks off this year ... Coach Tierney does a great job. (jhu7276) Always a strong presence, the Pride welcomes another Canadian gunslinger. Watch out. (Ketch) #9 - More challenges in the CAA this year, but I still like Hofstra to come back strong. (Lax Genius) The two Canadians at attack could be one of D1's more potent tandems. (maddog9718) #7. Probably my biggest surprise along with Denver. Seth Tierney can coach. He has a great group of new players, and while this might be too optimistic, I am taking a shot. This team has the potential to beat the higher ranked teams. (OCanada) Maybe I have them a notch too high. Card and Lincoln will force the issue. Middies are a young and relatively untested, with FOG an unanswered question. Scuderi will led the defense and the "other" Gvozden - Andrew - has some solid experience. (oldbartman) (P33 #13) Offense loses about half of its firepower, but that defense returns and should be stalwart. The real question is whether the now-experienced attackmen can pick up where the Flying Dutchmen left off last year. (Paesan33) #7. Loaded. (randyrad) My number 10 - but I've got them picked for the Final Four - Jay Card is brilliant - I think they rock it this year. (Rasheed) A well coached team that returns a lot including super star Jay Card on attack. A serious dark horse final four contender. (sore+old) Seth Tierney has built this squad into a team you don't want to play. Will knock off some teams. (Strannywastheman) Talent and more talent! NO time for talking; it's time to win on the field. (Tecumseh) #9 - Hoping to build on last season. I think this is the year they get back over the hump and into the quarterfinals, match-up dependent of course. (VTD) Harvard: John Tillman has recruited many strong players and now needs to put all the pieces together. (Baldo) Many people are picking Harvard to move up to a higher level. I'm not convinced yet. (Coyote) My #13 ... Ivy will be a dog fight and Harvard is ready. D a question, though. Early test vs. GU in DC will be crucial to both teams. (hoyaboy) Several good recruiting classes in the past few years leave the Crimson Tide with high expectations. Trendy pick this year, but they need to prove themselves on the field. (HU34) "The Cause" hits my top 10 under Coach Tillman ... lacrosse fever grips Cambridge ... put away the hockey sticks. (jhu7276) Harvard wrenches control of the Ivy League from a rebuilding Cornell team. (Ketch) Harvard has the horses to crack the top 10. Came close last year; newcomers like Jack Doyle will help the cause. (maddog9718) #10. I am a believer in Tillman. This might be a little premature, but they are building a strong program. Since my daughter played at Yale a few years ago, it pains me to say this. A lot of question marks here ... like almost every team. (OCanada) Yet another Ivy team with a good attack with Cohen and Gibbons. While two seniors will lead the midfield, a couple of freshmen (Doyle and White) could add some sizzle. An improving D will have to step up for whomever the Crimson put between the pipes. (oldbartman) (P33 #9) Returns a lot of talent. 2009 losses by 1 goal: G-town, Cornell, Princeton. That makes the replacement of Pike even more significant. (Paesan33) #8. Progress continues - my pick for Ivy champ. (randyrad) My 11. (Rasheed) Tillman has been recruiting aggressively, getting players they may have missed in the past. They can play. (Strannywastheman) T's sleeper for the Final 4 if the parents let the coaches coach. Much talent but still just way to much "help" from Friends and Family. Let it be, and they will win. (Tecumseh) #13 - Solid across the board, but not exceptional anywhere. You know they will play with discipline and tenacity. Maybe a year away from winning the Ivy, but with the league tournament this year anything is possible. (VTD) Notre Dame: Playing in the Big East will certainly test them more than their old league did. (Baldo) Stepping up the schedule this year with the Big East. (Coyote) My #10. Great on D but wait and see with the rest. Hoff left a big hole. Duke and Loyola early will test the Irish. (hoyaboy) The Big East will be much more competitive than the Great Western. The Fighting Irish should be up for the challenge. (HU34) Last year ended in a playoff THUD ... have yet to be considered to be one of the big boys. (jhu7276) The sting to the finish of last year will motivate the Fighting Irish. (Ketch) #11 - The golden domes won't have a schedule full of patsies to plump up their record this year, and it will show. (Lax Genius) Return stud goalie, but lost more in Hoff, Swezey, McDermott, and Christman than other top teams of last year. Only see ~2/3 losses on schedule, however. (maddog9718) #16. With apologies to my spouse. They lost seven players from last year's team. Maybe their best class to date. On offense, they have questions all over the field. If the frosh middies develop, they could move up quickly, but it is a lot to ask of middies at this level. (OCanada) The Irish must replace a lot of points lost on the attack, with Hicks the only proven starter. With Krebs and Brenneman, ND has a good 1st midfield. Scott Rodgers will be his usual wall in goal with a top D in front of him. Can this team score enough to win? (oldbartman) (P33 #11) Not impossible to replace Swezey, Hoff, and Christman, considering the talent remaining. Should be much harder to replace Scott Rodgers. Otherwise, I'd have them higher. (Paesan33) #13. Welcome to the Big East. (randyrad) I've got Notre Dame at number 9 - at least Weis isn't their coach. (Rasheed) Probably the best goalie in the nation. (sore+old) Great D, anemic offense last year. Big East play should help Irish recruiting. Hope they have a finisher this year. They need one. (Strannywastheman) Coach Dugan is a great addition of honestly and integrity. (Tecumseh) #10 - This is what ND has been waiting for ... a chance to compete in the Big East with the Big Boys. Rodgers is a brick wall in goal, best in the nation most likely, and the defense in front of him is none too shabby. Still, I expect them to struggle to put points again this season. (VTD) Navy: Always athletic and deep. Likely Patriot champs again. (Baldo) My #12. Mids get it done every year with discipline and heart ... always in the mix. Loyola, UNC early tests. (hoyaboy) Midshipmen reload every year and always play hard. Should be in the playoffs again. (HU34) The Mids still can't win vs. JHU. Will be competitive in the Patriot as usual ... suffered big loss to the Mules last year and Goats seek revenge. (jhu7276) Navy is usually ranked about five spots ahead of the reality of the situation. I've moved them to where they belong. (Ketch) #15 - I think that the Mids are perhaps overrated at the #15 spot, but they always seem to overachieve. (Lax Genius) Meade always has this team playing hard and together regardless of talent on paper. (maddog9718) #11. It gets a little tight in the next 10. They have depth and athletes all over the field. The defense should be strong. They have an experienced attack and can run three midfield lines. (OCanada) Doubt all you want. Every year the Midshipmen play solid ball. AA Tim Paul looks to lead on attack. While there are no studs, the middies will not let anyone rest. Same for the D. Goalie has always been one of Navy's strengths. Will they continue that this year? (oldbartman) (P33 #12) Should be a nice surprise this year and a favorite to win the Patriot. Returns almost all contributors from last year's campaign. (Paesan33) #6. Watching this squad in the fall and vs. UMBC has me thinkin' bout '04-05. If key players come back healthy, could surprise. (randyrad) My 12. (Rasheed) Their offense is pretty much all back from last year. New goalie needs to settle in early. (sore+old) Mids will play all tough. They're going to be good. Richie Meade can coach. (Strannywastheman) Healthy? Need Paul and Mansfield for the season. "D" looked very good against UMBC, but it was also 20 degrees and snowing. (Tecumseh) #12 - Defense seemingly reloads every year. Is Wickham the answer in goal? Not the most talented, but they can throw waves of decent midfielders at you who can run for days. Paul has a monster shot from the right side. (VTD) Brown: Will challenge in a four-deep Ivy race - the inaugural Ivy tournament will be very interesting to watch. (Baldo) Need to replace AA goalie and offensive production from the midfield. They have quality players at each position - their development determines the success of Brown's season. (Coyote) My #15. Let's see what happens at Hofstra first game. Their attack is great but goalie is unproven. (hoyaboy) Very impressive 2009 season. Thomas Muldoon will lead them to another solid season in 2010. (HU34) I like this team and the coach ... should challenge for the Ivy lead this year. (jhu7276) Showed a lot in last year's playoff loss to Hopkins. Second team to overtake Cornell, along with Harvard. (Ketch) #10 - The other polls seem to love Harvard to make the big jump this year, but I'm still riding the Bears for third in the Ivies. (Lax Genius) #17. Another team with heavy losses at middie. Muldoon and Feinburg are strong at attack. (OCanada) Brown surprised a lot of people last year, almost knocking Hopkins out of the playoffs. Two keys to that, Feinberg and Muldoon, return on attack. Seligman leads a depleted midfield, with face-offs a real need. Whereas the Bears defense relied on AA goalie Burke in years past, they defense needs to give the new starter real support. (oldbartman) (P33 #16) Just too many graduation losses, including most of its offense and Jordan Burke, to bounce back to the top 10. In 2009, it's worth mentioning that only Princeton beat these guys by more than one goal. (Paesan33) #17. In a tough, balanced Ivy, could easily vault into Top 10. (randyrad) My 15. (Rasheed) Great season last year. Loved their effort, left it all on the field. Tiffany has these guys going the right way. (Strannywastheman) The sleeper of the Ivys! (Tecumseh) #15 - Muldoon was an eye-opener at Homewood last May, I'm expecting huge things from him and the rest of the attack this year. They will have to lead the team, because Burke is gone and the midfield is barren to my eyes except for Seligmann (who himself is recovering from injury?). (VTD) Georgetown: Is this the year the "MYSTERY" with this team will finally be solved? (Baldo) Less expectations this year - does this signal a break through? (Coyote) My #9. A bit high here but Hoyas with something-to-prove seniors and exciting new talent should right the ship. Can beat (or lose ) to anybody. Early challenges vs. Terps, Harvard and Cuse will indicate potential to rectify recent slump . No AQ. (hoyaboy) Change of scenery to the Big East should be good for the Hoyas. (HU34) ALWAYS a massive disappointment on M Street. Too many distractions in Ole DC seem to affect this squad every year ... who knows where they will wind up? I sure don't. (jhu7276) This team plays nowhere near where it should be. What will it take to get them started? GT should be knocking on the door of the Final Four each year, not struggling to beat teams that simply want it more than they do. (Ketch) #14 - Too much talent to continue to be left out in the wilderness. It's time to pull it all together. (Lax Genius) GU has the talent to play with anyone (looked amazing against UMd last year). I think seniors Brancaccio, Dowd, Kocis etc. put it together and leave on a high note. (maddog9718) #13. Some day they will make the commitment needed to excel at the top level. They have depth and quality players and should not disappoint as badly this year. (OCanada) Can Coach Urick rekindle some of that old Hobart magic and get the Hoyas back in the hunt? On paper, a first midfield of Brancacio, Kocis, and Seligmann should score a lot ... Dowd leads an attack that needs consistency. An aggressive D needs to give goalie Davis some more help. (oldbartman) (P33 #15) Some very uninspiring losses last year. On the bright side though, a strong senior class returns. (Paesan33) #12. My annual prediction - they'll play up to their potential ... this season. (randyrad) My 13 - Urick's last year. (Rasheed) This program is at a crossroads. If they do not make the NCAAs for the third year in a row, coach may not be part of the solution. Big name recruits seem to give their their best on M Street, rather than the field. Will 2010 be more of the same? (Strannywastheman) A very tough league to play in! It's time to win in Foggy bottom. The faithful are concerned. (Tecumseh) #11 - Huge senior class, ranked #1 by IL when they came in ... It's now or never. The first midfield oozes potential, most of it unrealized so far. (VTD) Loyola: Likely will challenge for ECAC title. (Baldo) My #11. Better than their 9-5 record last year. First up Navy should be somewhat telling. Should win the ECAC and dance. (hoyaboy) Greyhounds will win a watered down ECAC and make it back to the playoffs. (HU34) Unleash those Hounds ... good second tier squad that has to recruit vs. UMBC, JHU and MD year in and out ... makes it tough to stand out in the DC/MD area. (jhu7276) Favorite in the ECAC, I always like watching the Hounds because they don't try to take the air out of the ball. Full speed ahead! (Ketch) #12 - So close to great year in 2009, and I expect continued improvement this year. (Lax Genius) #12. They lost a couple of key players like Ricci. I don't see them rising to the top 10, but they should be very competitive. (OCanada) Cooper MacDonnell and Colin Finnerty return to lead the Greyhound offense. Lusby is the only proven midfielder and is looking for company on the first line. With the graduation of P.T. Ricci, the defense will have to find their own identity. Having two excellent goalies in Hagelin and Peaty should help. (oldbartman) (P33 #14) Many different weapons that can hurt you. My only reservation is that without a competitor like PT Ricci, one-goal games might go the other way. (Paesan33) #15. New house worth +2 Ws. (randyrad) My 16. (Rasheed) Hounds will surprise those that have not been paying attention. New facility. Finnerty will lead offensively. (Strannywastheman) Coach Toomey is due, and this might be the year for a run that matters. (Tecumseh) #14 - Attack is quietly one of the best in the nation despite losing Koppens to graduation. Someone will need to step up at the midfield, but the Hounds should have a lot of TOP with Schiavone at the X. (VTD) UMBC: With Zim on the sideline they will always be a threat. (Baldo) The Retrievers will have to fight hard to defend their America East title. Albany and Stony Brook seem poised to challenge. (HU34) At the top of the second tier ... Yellow Banana Dog Retrievers will battle you like junkyard dogs, and they especially relish Terrapin Soup. (jhu7276) At some point UMBC will break through to the next level. This year? (Ketch) #8 - Defending AE champs. (Lax Genius) #15. Like Cornell, they lost a lot of talent at midfield. Zim is a great teacher, but they probably drop back a little this year. I don't expect them to go much higher. (OCanada) While defenses will focus on midfielder Kyle Wimer, don't be surprised to see the Retriever attack step up. After Wimer, UMBC needs to find a solid first midfield. D will welcome back Atwell. Goalie and face-offs are works in progress. (oldbartman) (P33 #10) Nobody does more with their talent than Zimm. Nobody. Arguably, Maryland should be beating the Dogs every year. Yet its quite opposite lately. (Paesan33) #16. Dropped 5 spots in my ranking when Atwell limped off in the snow bowl. (randyrad) My 14 - just lost too much. (Rasheed) Blevins, Poillion gone, but a bunch of seniors return. Not exactly sure what Zim has up his sleeve for this year, but he'll have something. (Strannywastheman) The dogs need to deliver! Had a tough day with Navy in the snow, which doesn't tell much. (Tecumseh) #16 - Zim always puts together a solid team with very strong fundamentals. Wimer might keel over and die of exhaustion by the time the season is over. (VTD) Bucknell: Always in the mix but sometimes inconsistent. (Baldo) Looked great in the fall - offense will score on anyone. (Coyote) Patriot League is going to be a dogfight again this year, and the Bison are in the mix. (HU34) Bison were best in PA for most of the season last year. (jhu7276) A good team that gets much media love, the Herd should be flirting with #15-#20 throughout the year. (Ketch) #18 - I love the blue collar attitude and effort of the Bison. (Lax Genius) Put together some solid scrimmage performances in the off-season, including holding their own against UNC in a blizzard. Could surprise in 2010. (maddog9718) #18. Big problem in goal with no experience there. The defense is a little thin on experience. The attack and offense will have to carry the day. (OCanada) A top-notch attack of Winter, Brandau, and Danylyshyn will keep defenses moving. Coupled with speedster Charlie Streep at midfield and a good FO/SS-DM in Clarke, expect to see the Bisons in the hunt for the Patriot League title. Major drawbacks are unproven D and the need to find a starting goaltender. (oldbartman) (P33 #18) If you haven't heard of Brandau, Winter, and Streep the last few years, you're not paying close enough attention. Should challenge Navy for the Patriot; however, they will need to replace Nick Sciubba. (Paesan33) #14. Awesome offense. Reloadable scheme D. 10-man-rider goalie again. It'll be another 1-goal game vs. Navy for the Patriot AQ. (randyrad) My 19. (Rasheed) A solid team with a legit star in Austin Winters. (sore+old) Bison had a great season, quality players return. Capable of knocking off the big boys. (Strannywastheman) Memo to Bison students: Please have your specific gravity checked some place other than Academy tailgates. Go Army! (Tecumseh) #17 - Disappointing finish to last season. Bison should be able to put up serious points this year on any non Top 5 competition they play. (VTD) Denver: Coach T. will make a difference - the question is how much of a difference in the first year. (Baldo) Coach Tierney is going to need some time to get the Pioneers into the elite category but he will eventually do it. (HU34) The Tierney Effect may carry them higher than this, but they'll need to adjust to life in the ECAC and more travel. (Ketch) #14. Tierney, without the admin procedures at Princeton, should garner excellent classes. I think they lost too much off last year's team and will need a year or so to expect a move into the top 10. That said Tierney, like a few other coaches, can win games he probably should not win. (OCanada) Its hard to believe I'm ranking a Bill Tierney coached team below the top 10. That said, this is a rebuilding/experiment year for Denver. Mathews has that north of the border scoring touch and will need to gel with his line mates. While there are no big guns at midfield, there is depth. Whoever starts in goal should expect their GAA to drop with a Tierney coached D in front of them. (oldbartman) (P33 #20) Too many question marks. Always seems to get ranked too high in February. Road woes. Graduation. Dismissals. But do you really want to doubt Bill Tierney? (Paesan33) My 17 - not this year, but next year they make the tournament. (Rasheed) Tierney will get this thing GOING. Give him two or three years, and we could see him deep in the tournament. They will compete with everybody. (Strannywastheman) Coach T ... nuff said! (Tecumseh) #25 - Waiting and watching. Tierney arrives but much of top talent has made a mass exodus the past few years (and mostly not due to graduation). (VTD) Massachusetts: Could be a force in their first year in the Colonial League. (Baldo) The CAA received a boost with the addition of UMass and Penn State. The Minutemen will challenge for the title their first year in the league. (HU34) The Minutemen should be solid but seem to have regressed to a perennial top 15-20 team. (jhu7276) I have no idea where this team is headed, but they are obviously Top 25 material. (Ketch) #16 - Coming off an ECAC championship, can they make it back to back in a new conference? (Lax Genius) #20. The talk begins with their defense, but it draws too many penalties, at least that is my impression, and there are too many holes on offense to fill. (OCanada) Finding someone to fill Doc Schneider's shoes is the key to the Minutemen's season. Kell and Hayes will lead the offense, and Godoi will anchor a better than expected D. (oldbartman) (P33 #24) Graduates a very talented class. (Paesan33) #22. Big reload. Could move up. (randyrad) My 18. (Rasheed) Welcome to the Jungle! Can they get it done? New conference should help. (Tecumseh) Albany: My dark horse pick. (HU34) Scooped Cuse for a few recruits this year ... Scoobies are enthusiastic for 2010 season ... Coach Marr doing a nice job. (jhu7276) Danes fans are predicting that this is going to be a much better year than where I've placed them. I want to see it first. (Ketch) #19. Last year's tailspin should be over. They failed to make the tourney after a strong start. This should be a rebuilding year with progress made as the season progresses. (OCanada) Caufield, Resetarits, and Pompo will provide the scoring. Two starters return on a defense in search of consistency in the goal. (oldbartman) #21. If D gels, will move up. (randyrad) My 20. (Rasheed) They are back this year. Started to gel late last season, top 10 potential again. Resetarits is very good. Runs in the family. (Strannywastheman) Coach Marr has done an amazing job recruiting and cares about all his players. It's time to win. (Tecumseh) #19 - Seriously disappointing season last year. They will need to find a goalie or this year might not be much better. (VTD) Stony Brook: Could be a big year for the Wolves. (Baldo) Seawolves can put the ball in the net but keeping it out of their own goal will be the key to them making the playoffs in 2010. (HU34) Throw a bone to sore&old and his wolves of the sea. (jhu7276) All of the pieces are there for this to be a breakthrough season. (Ketch) A team that can explode on offense with all three starters back on attack. One of the best FOGOs in Adam Rand returns and will be giving the ball to a high scoring 1st midfield. Defense is the major worry. Goalie Charlie Paar is a solid stopper. (oldbartman) (P33 #17) Returns almost everyone; potent offense; all upperclassmen. Any way you slice it, though, will need to beat BC and Albany in the same year to win the AE. (Paesan33) #24. Could grab the AQ. (randyrad) Here is an experienced team that is deep in every position. They return 3rd team AA (Canadian National Team) McBride at attack, 2rd team AA Crowley at middie, F/O star Rand. Look out! (sore+old) #18 - Defense will have to improve otherwise this year will probably be like the last two where they put up a ton of points but gave up even more. Paar had serious hype coming to Towson out of high school but it never materialized. Is this year his coming out party? (VTD) Penn State: Chronic underachievers could benefit form a switch to the Colonial, where they can contend for a title. (Baldo) Nittany Lions need to put together a full season. Seems like they always take a couple of games off and it costs them come selection Sunday. (HU34) On the basis of their anemic start last year, I can't rank them higher, but if they string together early season wins, they could move up and challenge teams like G-town. (jhu7276) Penn State could finish much higher than where I have them starting, but only if they start playing from the beginning of the season. (Ketch) #17 - If PSU can get over heir usual early season funk, they may be able to really make an impact this year. (Lax Genius) (P33 #21) Strong finish in 2009. Needs to replace Drew Adams. Quickly. (Paesan33) #19. Will thrive in the CAA. (randyrad) Army: There will be surprises both good and bad for the Cadets. (Baldo) The Black Knights are always in the running for a Patriot League title but they just can't grasp it. (HU34) Expect the usual gritty play from the Black Knights. Goalie Palesky will anchor a strong defense. The midfield returns four of its top six players, while Boltus will lead the attack. (oldbartman) #18. Team defense will return this team to a winning record and the Top 20. (randyrad) Coach A. has a team that are all heroes for what they have chosen to do. We thank each and every one of his players. (Tecumseh) #21 - Went back and forth between the Knights and Albany/Delaware for the last two spots. Palesky is Stonewall Jackson back there, but will they be able to score? It's a problem most years. (VTD) Delaware: Blue Hens looking to rebound from a disappointing 2009. (HU34) Should be higher than #16, but there was no place to put them. (Ketch) Solid midfield play will lead the Hens. Attackman Curtis Dickson is a threat anytime he has the ball. Delaware should make some noise in the CAA. (oldbartman) (P33 #19) Somewhat of a surprise team this year. Stockpiles of talented scorers are going to pay off in 2010. Needs more discipline on defense. (Paesan33) #20 - Back on the upswing. Led by a pair of strong veterans, and I'm expecting Fossner to have a breakout season. (VTD) Colgate: Red Raiders must show us they belong in top twenty with some upsets this year. (jhu7276) #20 - Lots of work to do to replace Corp, but Coach Nagle won't let the Red Raiders fall too far. (Lax Genius) Gate is not sneaking up on anyone now. Nagle's a really good coach. Patriot is a deep conference. (Strannywastheman) Villanova: Big East will be a challenge. (Baldo) Wildcats got their first taste of the playoffs last year but they will be hard pressed to get another bite. (HU34) Mainline is due! (Tecumseh) Dartmouth: Ohio State: Still trying to get over the hump. (Baldo) My #3 in the ECAC behind Loyola and Denver. (Ketch) Big losses on attack need to be filled. Ventiquattro will be looking for help. Defense and goal are solid. Midfield scoring is an unknown. (oldbartman) Who replaces Joel? (Tecumseh) #22 - Decent across the board, but OSU does not have much that really stands out from the crowd. (VTD) Drexel: (P33 #23) You are reading that right - Drexel. (Paesan33) What a great place to watch a game. (Tecumseh) #23 - Adjusting to a new coach. Manos takes up the entire 6x6, and Ambler is a bull. (VTD) Hobart: Hope springs eternal in Geneva. (Baldo) Statesmen need to "negotiate" less and score more goals. (jhu7276) The Statesmen showed some flashes last year. Must be more consistent and learn to close. (Ketch) #19 - Plenty of depth at midfield will be the strength of the Statesmen in 2010. Sean Robinson is going to turn a lot of heads at attack, and a solid defense led by an underrated Alex Caton at LSM and Max Silberlicht in the crease will have Hobart in the mix in the revamped ECAC. (Lax Genius) You can't expect me not to put them in here ... After giving last year's NC runner-up all they could handle, the Statesmen have a large group of returning starters. Curtin, Pedersen, and Cassells come in as the top three scores. A a pair of solid face-offs guys, big Max in goal, and some new faces will help surprise a few teams. (oldbartman) Air Force: #20. Surprise team of the year. Progress continues. Cracking the Top 20 this year. (randyrad) Other Teams Pollsters Considered (and comments, if any) Towson: #25. ... ya never know. (randyrad) #24 - Expecting a big year out of Wheeler. Defense is veteran but Towson seems to give up goals in bunches every year anyway. (VTD) Yale: Siena: (P33 #22) Yep- Siena. (Paesan33) Fairfield: (P33 #25) A lot of young talent may come of age in 2010. Honorable mention to AFA, Bob Morris. (Paesan33) #23. Recruiting well. Could surprise. (randyrad) Bryant: Penn: Ivy dark horse. Coach Murphy knows how to win. Can it rub off on his players? (Tecumseh) | |||||
