Queens University of Charlotte Signs Six for 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (December 11, 2007) – Queens University of Charlotte Head Women's Lacrosse Coach Kevin Cooke has announced the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to begin competing for the Royals in the 2008-2009 season. Joining the Royals are Kristen Kemp, Shannon Casey, Kaitlynn Hendricks, Brittany Phillip, Taylor Barry, and Chelsea Lancashire.
“We couldn't be more excited about this incoming group,” said Cooke. “They are an exceptionally talented and passionate group that will have an immediate impact on our program and help in every position. I am looking forward to their arrival next fall and seeing these players develop at the collegiate level with the rest of our squad."
Kemp, a Lake Mary, Fla., native, comes to Queens from Winter Springs High School, where she has been playing lacrosse for seven years. Last season as a junior, she led the team in goals with 67. She was named most valuable player, received the conference honorable mention award and was named to the district all-state team. On top of being a member of the Bears women's lacrosse team, she competes on the Lax Maniax club team. In addition to playing lacrosse for Winter Springs, Kristen is a member of the cross country team.
Casey is from Bel Air, Md., and attends John Carroll High School. Last year Casey, an attacker, helped lead her team to an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland "A" Conference Championship and received an achievement award. In addition to the achievement award, she was recognized as all-county honorable mention in 2006. Casey is also a member of the Nems club team. At Carroll, Casey is a three-sport athlete. Along with lacrosse she competes on the field hockey and indoor track teams.
Hendricks hails from Forest Hill, Md. and has played lacrosse for seven years. She comes to Queens from Fallston High School where she plays defender. She and Casey are teammates on the Nems club team. Hendricks is a dual sport athlete at Fallston, she plays field hockey where her team is routinely ranked among the top 10 teams in Maryland.
Phillip, a native of Corning, N.Y., attends Corning East High School where she has been a starter for the lacrosse team since her freshman year. Phillip has a natural ability to lead. In recognition of this ability, she was named second team all-leader award as a freshman and sophomore. In 2007 Phillips competed in the Empire State Games in 2007 and was an alternate in 2006. Away from the Corning East team, she also played club for the Laxified lacrosse team.
Lancashire, another Florida native, comes from Ponte Vedra, Fla. Lancashire plays goalie for her high school, Nease High School. During the 2007 season, she made 174 saves at the varsity level as a junior, a 56 percent save rate. During that same year she was named all-district 1st team. In addition to her high school team she is a member of the Lax Maniax club team.
Barry joins Queens from Bel Air, Md., and has been playing lacrosse for the past 13 years. Barry plays attack for C. Milton Wright High School. On top of playing lacrosse, Barry has been a member of the field hockey team since her freshman year. She has also been playing for the 543 Club lacrosse team for the past four years. [full story]
