Quality Win Factor
The Quality Win Factor is computed either of two ways. First, it is computed in the
traditional way by defeating ranked teams (polls) and second, similar to the
first method, it is computed by defeating teams based on power ratings when no
polls exist.
QWF based on polls
The Quality Win Factor is based on the number of wins against quality
opponents. A quality opponent is defined as a team which is ranked in
the polls. The coaches poll is used and the number of quality teams will depend
on the number of teams listed in the poll. A victory against the number 1 ranked
team is worth 1.0 points and a victory against the 20th ranked team is worth 0.05
points. When ten teams exist in a poll, a victory against the best team is worth 1.0
points and a victory against the tenth team is worth 0.1 points.

In college lacrosse Div I, Maryland would have accumulated the most Quality
Win points based on victories against: Duke, Towson, North Carolina, Bucknell,
Navy, Johns Hopkins and Virgina. The top 20 teams were based on the results
of the USLIA/STX Coaches Poll. The Quality Wins Factor is employed in the BCS
formula to compensate for teams that risk a loss against the highest rated teams.

QWF based on power ratings
Instead of using poll rankings, teams are rated based on their power rating.
In 2006, Southern California's Football team had the highest QWF based on the
power ratings because of wins against Arkansas, Nebraska, Oregon, California
and Notre Dame. It scored QW points against teams not ranked in the polls
such as Arizona, Washington State, Washington and others. These non-ranked
teams contribution are based on their power rating divided by 119 (total
number of teams playing divsion I-A as comared with considering only teams
rated in the polls (previous method) which make no contribution to the total
number of waulity points.
