There are numerous criteria which can be used in a power rating calculation. They may include: (1) LOC: margin of victory and location (home, away, neutral) for local games. (2) SOS: strength of schedule. (3) RPI: ratings percentage index. (4) WLP: won-loss percentage. (5) POL: poll ranking. and correction factors below are added: (6) EXT: correction for games played outside a teams' state or region. (7) COR: correction factor based on playing above or below a power rating. (8) QWF: quality win factor based on defeating a quality team ranked (power rating or poll ranking). (9) TGL: Adjustment to the ratings for running-up-the-score. The formula can weigh all of the ratings and combine then with different weight factors (coefficients) associated with each of them. In the case below, the factors are listed with coefficients below them. For the case represented below, the local margin of victory is weighed 100% and the remainder are 0%. SUM = the total after all factors are weighed and TOT is then normalized so that the best team is not higher than 100. If many groups are considered (e.g., DI,II,III or multiple states in high school) a regional offset margin ROM is added to the SUM before it is normalized to produce the relationship between these groups (TOT). The values assigned to the weighting factors are rather arbitrary and that is why the so-called 'computer- ratings' are in fact, just one person's opinion. The computer's role is simply to perform arithmetic and logic operations solving the formula(s).
