Won-Loss Percentage

The Won-Loss Factor is computed by dividing wins by total number of games.
Ties are counted as a half win. Below are the records and W-L Factor for some NCAA
college fooball Div 1A teams for 2006.

These are total game records including all games regardless of whether they
are played within or outside of the team's division. Now consider the case of
Men's Division I lacrosse. The won-loss records for divisions are defined.
Examining the tail end of total, we get :

  46 Quinnipiac 4- 9- 0
  47 Providence 6-10- 0

For division I, we get:

  46 Quinnipiac 4- 9- 0
  47 Providence 6-10- 0

  49 Sacred Heart 4-10- 0
  50 Canisius 4- 9- 0
  51 Holy Cross 3-12- 0

  54 Marist 4- 9- 0
  55 Saint Joseph's 6- 9- 0
  56 VMI 3-11- 0
  57 Detroit 0-10- 0
  58 Presbyterian 1-11- 0
  59 Wagner 1-15- 0

Note that Detroit played a Division II game, so that game does not count
in their Division I record. Thus the division record will have less games
then the total record.

There are some who believe that games played later in the season should
count more than games played earlier in the season. A mathematical representation
of this is found below.

The time of game played can be weighed as follows:

a win or loss is multiplied by 1 + (game number / (total games))
where game number is 1, 2, 3, etc which is the game order played.
So the fifth game of a ten game season is counted as

1 + 5/10 = 1.5 (win or loss) and the last game is
     1 + 10/10 = 2.0 (win or loss).

In NCAA Division I hockey , Won-Loss records in the RPI formula are
modified to take into account that winning on the road is much tougher
than winning at home.:

   (a) a road victory counts as 1.4 wins
   (b) a road loss counts as 0.6 losses
   (c) a home victory counts as 0.6 wins
   (d) a home loss counts as 1.4 losses
